Paul George To Depart Clippers For 76ers Following Contract Dispute

Paul George has informed the Los Angeles Clippers of his decision to join another team, with the Philadelphia 76ers emerging as the frontrunner. The Clippers announced on Sunday that George and his representatives communicated his departure after five seasons with the team. The nine-time All-Star declined a $48.7 million player option for the 2024-25 season on Saturday.

The Clippers released a statement expressing their understanding and respect for George's decision. "Paul is a tremendous talent and an elite two-way player. We feel fortunate for the five years we spent with him," they said. They also mentioned that despite months of negotiations, they were unable to reach a mutually beneficial contract agreement.

George Joins 76ers After Clippers Exit

According to The Athletic, George is set to meet with the 76ers on Sunday night and is expected to make a decision soon after. No other teams are believed to be in contention for the veteran forward. "Paul has informed us that he is signing his next contract with another team," stated the Clippers.

The Clippers explored an opt-in and trade scenario but found it unfeasible under the new CBA due to limited asset value. They expressed excitement about new opportunities and greater flexibility under the new CBA to field a highly competitive team moving forward.

ESPN reports that George was seeking a four-year extension, while the Clippers were only willing to offer a deal similar to Kawhi Leonard's three-year, $152 million contract signed in January. "Per source ... there's a real chance that Paul George will make his final decision tonight," tweeted Law Murray.

George's Tenure with the Clippers

The Clippers acquired George from Oklahoma City in July 2019 through a blockbuster trade involving five first-round picks and future All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Leonard joined Los Angeles that same summer, aiming to transform the Clippers into one of the Western Conference's top teams.

Despite their regular-season success, post-season achievements were limited. The Clippers reached the Western Conference finals in 2021 but lost in six games to the Phoenix Suns. They have not advanced past the first round in any of the last three seasons.

Philadelphia 76ers' Prospects

The 76ers are well-positioned this off-season with ample cap space, potentially pairing George with NBA MVP Joel Embiid and sharpshooter Tyrese Maxey. This move aims to challenge reigning NBA champions Boston in the Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia has struggled in recent post-seasons, reaching the play-offs seven consecutive years but failing to advance beyond the second round during that period.

George often battled injuries during his time with Los Angeles but maintained elite performance levels when healthy. He averaged 23 points, six rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while shooting nearly 40% from three-point range over his five seasons with the Clippers.

The Clippers will miss Paul George but are optimistic about their future prospects under new CBA regulations, which provide them greater flexibility moving forward.
