Doncic And Irving Shine As Mavericks Secure NBA Finals Berth

Luka Dončić scored 20 of his 36 points in the first quarter, and Kyrie Irving also scored 36 as the Dallas Mavericks secured a spot in the NBA Finals with a 124-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night. Dallas dominated Game 5, building a 29-point halftime lead on 61 percent shooting and extending their lead to as many as 36 points in the third quarter.

The Mavericks will have a full week to rest before the NBA Finals begin in Boston on June 6, marking the franchise's first appearance since winning the title in 2011. The Celtics have been off since completing a sweep of Indiana on Monday. Irving improved to 15-1 in his career in closeout games during the playoffs.

Mavs Head to NBA Finals

Anthony Edwards scored 28 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 28 points with 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who failed to build on their Game 4 win in Dallas. Dončić hit his first four shots and drained a 32-footer later in the first quarter. The Mavericks closed on a 17-1 run, which they extended to a 28-5 stretch over nine minutes.

This was Dončić's second 20-point quarter in his postseason career, following a 21-point fourth quarter in the Western Conference finals loss to Golden State in 2022. Dallas also welcomed back backup center Dereck Lively II from a sprained neck that had sidelined him for the previous game. Lively contributed nine points and eight rebounds, while Daniel Gafford added 11 points and nine boards.

The Mavericks' performance sets up an eagerly anticipated NBA Finals matchup against the Boston Celtics. With both teams having ample rest before the series begins, fans can expect high-level competition. The Celtics' sweep of Indiana showcased their strength, while Dallas' dominant win over Minnesota highlighted their readiness for the challenge ahead.

As the Mavericks prepare for their first Finals appearance since their championship run in 2011, all eyes will be on Dončić and Irving to see if they can lead Dallas to another title. The series promises to be an exciting conclusion to an already thrilling NBA season.
