Los Angeles Clippers Confirm New Long-Term Deal For Coach Tyronn Lue

Tyronn Lue is set to continue his tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers after agreeing to a new long-term contract, the team announced on Wednesday. While the specific terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, ESPN reports that Lue's new deal will place him among the NBA's highest-paid coaches.

Lue has amassed a 184-134 record over four seasons with the Clippers. He was previously rumoured to be a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at the Los Angeles Lakers, which would have reunited him with LeBron James. Lue coached James during a successful stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, leading them to their only NBA championship in the 2015-16 season.

Clippers Extend Coach Lue's Contract

During that championship run, Lue replaced David Blatt mid-season and guided a team led by James and Kyrie Irving to victory over the Golden State Warriors in seven games. Lue also found immediate success with the Clippers, replacing Doc Rivers before the 2020-21 season and leading the team to the Western Conference finals, where they lost to the Phoenix Suns in six games.

The Clippers have not won a playoff series in Lue's subsequent three seasons. However, they finished fourth in the Western Conference with a 51-31 record in the 2023-24 season. They were defeated in six games in the opening round by the Dallas Mavericks, who later advanced to the conference finals and currently lead 3-1 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Lue's overall record as a head coach stands at 312-217 during regular seasons and 54-37 in playoff games over eight seasons. He also led the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2017 and 2018, although they lost both times to the Warriors. Cleveland dismissed Lue following an 0-6 start to the 2018-19 season, which was their first after James left for a second time to join the Lakers.

With Lue now secured under contract, the Clippers can focus on retaining their star players Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and James Harden. Harden is set to become a free agent this offseason, while George could also enter free agency by declining his $48.8 million player option, which he is widely expected to do.

The Clippers' management will need to navigate these potential changes carefully to maintain their competitive edge in upcoming seasons. The team's ability to keep its core players together will be crucial for their aspirations of achieving greater success under Lue's leadership.
