Lakers To Appoint JJ Redick As Head Coach In Surprising Move
The Los Angeles Lakers have appointed JJ Redick as their new head coach, despite his lack of coaching experience. Redick, a former NBA guard, was not the team's first choice. The Lakers initially approached Dan Hurley, who recently led the University of Connecticut to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament title, but he declined the offer.
Redick, 39, will be on the sidelines next season. He is well-known for his partnership with LeBron James on their podcast, Mind the Game, which they started in March. The Lakers hope this relationship will encourage James to exercise his $51.4 million contract option this month instead of becoming a free agent.

According to ESPN sources, Redick has agreed to a four-year contract with the Lakers. Rob Pelinka offered him the job on June 20, 2024. Redick has already begun assembling a staff with experienced personnel to support him.
Redick replaces Darvin Ham, who was dismissed in May after the Lakers finished the season with a 47-35 record and were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs. Ham had led the team to the Western Conference finals in his first season as head coach in 2022-23, where they were swept by the eventual NBA champions, the Nuggets.
The Orlando Magic selected Redick with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. He played 15 seasons in the league and is ranked 20th all-time in NBA history with 1,950 made three-pointers. Additionally, he holds a 41.5% shooting percentage from beyond the arc, placing him 15th in league history.
After retiring from professional basketball in September 2021, Redick joined ESPN as an analyst. His transition from player to coach marks a significant shift in his career trajectory.
Expectations and Future Prospects
The Lakers' decision to hire Redick reflects their confidence in his potential to lead the team effectively. His close relationship with LeBron James could play a crucial role in maintaining team cohesion and performance.
As Redick steps into his new role, he faces the challenge of proving himself as a capable coach without prior experience. The upcoming season will be pivotal for both him and the Lakers as they aim to build on their recent successes and overcome past challenges.
