Knicks Acquire Mikal Bridges From Nets In Strategic Blockbuster Trade
The New York Knicks have secured a trade to bring forward Mikal Bridges to Madison Square Garden for the upcoming season, according to multiple media reports on Tuesday. The Knicks acquired Bridges by sending Bojan Bogdanovic, four unprotected first-round draft picks, and a protected first-round pick via the Milwaukee Bucks to the Brooklyn Nets.
Bridges, 27, has two seasons remaining on his four-year, $90.9 million rookie extension signed with the Phoenix Suns. The Nets were reportedly concerned about losing him for nothing if he reached free agency. Last season in Brooklyn, Bridges averaged 19.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists over 82 games.

Bridges will reunite with former college teammates Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, and Josh Hart as the Knicks continue to build a Villanova alumni club in their locker room. This move deepens the connection to the Villanova national championship roster.
A versatile two-way player, Bridges is expected to provide secondary scoring and ball-handling on offense. He could benefit from open 3-point opportunities as defenses focus on Brunson and Julius Randle. Additionally, Bridges holds the NBA's active Iron Man streak with 474 consecutive games played, which is valuable for a Knicks team that struggled with injuries last season.
The trade involves significant risks for the Knicks. Besides losing substantial draft capital, adding Bridges raises questions about retaining OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein, who will be free agents on June 30. A frontcourt featuring Randle, Anunoby, Hartenstein, and Mitchell Robinson might become too crowded.
The Knicks had previously traded RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley to acquire Anunoby at last season's deadline. However, Anunoby's skill set may overlap with Bridges' role on the team. If Knicks president Leon Rose can retain either Anunoby or Hartenstein, it would add depth to a squad that won 50 games last season but faltered in the playoffs due to key injuries.
Nets Focus on Future Assets
The Nets are likely to take a step back after losing their leading scorer from last season. However, this trade helps replenish their future assets depleted by acquiring James Harden in 2021. With early reports indicating that the 2025 draft class is rich in high-level talent, Brooklyn has shifted its focus towards future seasons rather than immediate success.
This strategic move by both teams highlights their differing priorities: the Knicks aim to bolster their current roster around Jalen Brunson while the Nets look ahead to rebuilding through future drafts.
