Klay Thompson To Boost Mavericks With $50M Three-Year Deal

Klay Thompson has agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks. This deal, which includes a player option, is part of a multi-team sign-and-trade that sends Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. The Mavericks hope Thompson can help them secure their second NBA title.

Thompson will join forces with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on the Mavericks. The team recently lost to the Boston Celtics in five games during the NBA Finals. They aim to win their first championship since 2011.

Thompson's $50M Mavericks Move

Thompson's move signifies the end of an era for the Golden State Warriors. He was a crucial part of their dynasty, contributing to four NBA championships from 2014-2022. Drafted 11th overall in 2011, he became one of the franchise's best players.

Over his career with Golden State, Thompson made 2,481 three-pointers, ranking sixth all-time in NBA history. Only Stephen Curry has more three-pointers for the Warriors. Thompson also ranks fourth in games played (793) and sixth in points (15,531) for the team.

Known for his long-range shooting, Thompson led the league with 4.4 made three-pointers per game in the 2022-23 season. However, his performance dipped last season to 3.5 three-pointers per game, shooting 38.7% from beyond the arc.

During his prime years, Thompson was among the top scorers in the NBA. He averaged at least 20 points per game for five consecutive seasons from 2014-19 and was a key player in three championship teams during that period.

Challenges and Comebacks

Thompson faced significant challenges due to injuries. He missed the entire 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons because of a torn ACL and a ruptured Achilles tendon. Despite these setbacks, he returned to average 20.4 points in 32 games and helped Golden State win another title.

His streak of seven straight seasons averaging over 20 points ended in 2023-24 when he averaged 17.9 points in 77 games. Midway through that season, he was moved out of the starting lineup for the first time since his rookie year.

"Klay Thompson has reached an agreement to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50M deal that will require a sign-and-trade," reported Chris B Haynes via Twitter.

The Mavericks are optimistic about their new lineup featuring Thompson alongside Doncic and Irving. They believe this combination can lead them to another championship victory.

The addition of Thompson brings experience and skill to Dallas' roster as they strive for success in upcoming seasons.
