French Talent Takes Center Stage At NBA Draft With Top Picks

For the second consecutive year, a French player was chosen first overall in the NBA draft. This highlights the NBA's global reach, with players from France also being selected second and sixth in the 2024 draft. The Atlanta Hawks kicked off Wednesday's draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn by picking Zaccharie Risacher first overall. The Washington Wizards followed by selecting Alexandre Sarr with the No. 2 pick.

The Charlotte Hornets continued the trend by choosing forward Tidjane Salaun with the sixth pick. This marked the first time in modern history that three players from a country other than the United States were selected in the top 10 of an NBA draft. Risacher is known for his catch-and-shoot 3-point skills and strong wing defense, while Sarr is a big man with wing-like ball-handling abilities and elite rim protection.

French Stars Lead NBA Draft

Salaun, at just 18 years old, was the youngest player drafted and is praised for his athleticism and high energy. Another French player, Pacome Dadiet, was taken by the New York Knicks at No. 25 before the first round ended. This follows last year's selection of Victor Wembanyama as the first overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs, marking consecutive years where No. 1 picks did not play college basketball in the United States.

Not all top picks were from France, however. After Risacher and Sarr, Houston Rockets picked Reed Sheppard from Kentucky for his sharp-shooting skills. The San Antonio Spurs used their first of two top-10 picks to select guard Stephon Castle from Connecticut at No. 4. Three picks later, Castle's UConn teammate Donovan Clingan was chosen by Portland Trail Blazers.

The Spurs then used their second top-10 pick to take Kentucky point guard Rob Dillingham at No. 8 but later traded him to Minnesota Timberwolves. Forward Ron Holland II, who skipped college to play in the G League, went to Detroit Pistons at No. 5. A major surprise came when Memphis Grizzlies selected Zach Edey with the ninth pick; many experts had predicted he would be picked much later.

The Utah Jazz completed the top 10 by selecting Colorado forward Cody Williams, known for his defensive prowess and ball-handling skills. One notable absence from the first round was Bronny James, son of LeBron James, NBA's all-time leading scorer. Despite LeBron expressing a dream to play alongside his son, Los Angeles Lakers chose Dalton Knecht with their 17th pick instead.

Future Prospects

Knecht is a prolific scorer and an AP All-American from Tennessee who many expected to be a top-10 pick but slid down during the draft. Bronny James wasn't projected to be a first-round pick but might still be selected on Day 2 of the draft on Thursday.

This year's draft showcased international talent prominently, especially from France, reflecting basketball's growing global influence and diverse pool of emerging stars.
