Luka Doncic Shoulders Blame For Mavericks' NBA Finals Game 2 Loss

Luka Doncic expressed regret over his performance as the Dallas Mavericks fell to a 2-0 deficit against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. Despite achieving a triple-double with 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, the Mavericks lost 105-98 on Sunday. Doncic, who played through minor injuries, was critical of his own game.

"I think my turnovers and my missed free throws cost us the game," Doncic said. "So, I've got to do way better in those two categories. But at the end of the day, we've got to make shots to win the game."

Doncic Blames Self for Game 2 Loss

Doncic's performance places him among elite company. He is only the fourth player, following LeBron James, Charles Barkley, and Jerry West, to record a 30-point triple-double in a Finals loss. Despite this achievement, Doncic remained focused on areas for improvement.

Teammate Kyrie Irving aimed to provide support for Doncic. "He's not alone, and we are going to tell him that," Irving said. "He's spilling into his emotions, feels like he could play better, just like me. I would take the brunt of the responsibility."

Irving acknowledged his own struggles in the first two games. "A lot of shots were hitting the back rim. That could p*** you off as a competitor, but it's all part of the game of basketball," he added.

Coaching Perspective

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd suggested that Doncic was being too self-critical. "He was great," Kidd said. "No matter what he says, that's just who he is. He's a leader. It's not all on him. It's a team. We win as a team, and we lose as a team."

Kidd praised Doncic's effort and highlighted the team's overall defensive performance. "He put us in a position. He was really good tonight. Unfortunately, we just couldn't get over the hump," Kidd noted.

Looking Ahead

The Mavericks will return to Dallas for Game 3 with hopes of turning their fortunes around. The team will need to address their shooting and ball-handling issues if they are to mount a comeback in the series.

As Irving pointed out, accepting the ups and downs of a series is one of the toughest challenges in basketball. The Mavericks will need to regroup and focus on executing their game plan more effectively in the upcoming matches.
