Derrick White And Celtics Finalize Four-Year, £125.9M Contract Extension
Derrick White played a crucial role in the Boston Celtics' NBA championship win this season and is now reaping the rewards. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, White has agreed to a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension with the Celtics. This new deal includes a player option and represents a significant pay increase from his previous four-year, $70 million contract signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 2020.
White, who turns 30 on Tuesday, was acquired by the Celtics from the Spurs at the 2022 trade deadline. He has since been named to the NBA's All-Defensive second team in each of his first two full seasons with Boston. His defensive prowess was on full display during the Celtics' series-clinching Game 5 win over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. In that game, White made a critical hustle play late in the first half, diving for a loose ball and chipping a tooth in the process. He finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals as Boston secured its 18th NBA title.

During Boston's playoff run, White started all 19 games and averaged 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. He led the team with 65 made three-pointers in the playoffs, shooting an impressive 40.4 per cent from beyond the arc. This followed a regular season where he shot 39.6 per cent on three-pointers and averaged 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds over 73 games.
With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White leading the charge, the defending champion Celtics are entering the 2024-25 season as favourites in the Eastern Conference. However, they will face stiff competition from teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, who recently acquired Paul George to pair with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The new contract for White marks a significant financial boost compared to his previous deal with San Antonio. The extension underscores Boston's commitment to keeping their core players intact as they aim for another championship run.
White's impact on both ends of the court has been invaluable for Boston. His ability to make clutch plays and contribute significantly in key moments has solidified his importance to the team.

The Celtics' acquisition of White has proven to be a pivotal move for their success over recent seasons. His defensive skills have earned him recognition within the league while his offensive contributions have been equally significant.
As Boston prepares for another competitive season ahead, retaining key players like Derrick White will be essential for maintaining their status as top contenders in the league.
The upcoming season promises intense competition within the Eastern Conference as teams bolster their rosters aiming to dethrone Boston from their championship position.
