Charlotte Hornets Announce Charles Lee As New Head Coach

The Charlotte Hornets have officially named Charles Lee as their new head coach, a significant move aimed at revitalizing a franchise that currently holds the NBA's longest streak of playoff absences. Lee, who previously contributed to the Milwaukee Bucks' NBA championship victory in the 2020-21 season, steps into his new role under a four-year agreement. He succeeds Steve Clifford, who, after concluding this season, transitions to a front-office advisory position within the Hornets organization.

Charlotte's performance in the 2023-24 season saw them finishing with a 21-61 record, a standing shared with the Portland Trail Blazers as the third-lowest in the league. Lee's appointment marks a pivotal moment for the Hornets, as expressed by Lee himself, who regards this opportunity as a realization of a lifelong dream. He extends his gratitude towards team owners Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, along with Vice President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson, for entrusting him with the leadership of the team.

Charles Lee New Hornets Coach

Throughout his decade-long tenure as an NBA assistant, beginning with the Atlanta Hawks in 2014, Lee has been instrumental in numerous successful seasons. The 39-year-old boasts participation in nine postseasons and has been part of staff for seven division champions. Notably, three of these teams reached the Eastern Conference finals. His recent role with the Boston Celtics further underscores his capability, contributing to their impressive 64-18 record in the latest season.

Peterson lauds Lee's appointment, highlighting his character, player rapport, and commitment to fostering a culture of accountability. Lee's comprehensive basketball knowledge and experience are seen as assets that align with the Hornets' vision for building a competitive and enduring team.

Lee's journey also includes a significant stint with the Bucks under Mike Budenholzer and a promotion to associate head coach in 2022 before joining the Celtics as their top assistant. His move to Charlotte is viewed as an opportunity to leverage his championship experience and leadership skills to steer the Hornets out of their eight-season playoff drought.

The Hornets' roster boasts promising talent with players like Brandon Miller, LaMelo Ball, and Mark Williams, all of whom are 22 years old or younger. Despite challenges such as Ball's ankle injuries limiting his playtime and Williams' back issues, Lee remains optimistic about building a competitive team around this young core. His enthusiasm for basketball's deep-rooted passion in the Carolinas is palpable as he looks forward to making an impactful start in Charlotte.
