Boston Celtics Seal Jayson Tatum With Record $314 Million Supermax Deal
The Boston Celtics have rewarded Jayson Tatum with a historic contract extension following their 18th NBA championship. The five-year supermax extension is valued at nearly $314 million, making it the largest in NBA history. Tatum qualified for this deal by being named to the All-NBA First Team in the 2022-23 season.
This extension is part of the Celtics' strategy to maintain their championship-winning team. Earlier on Monday, Boston and Derrick White agreed to a four-year, $126 million extension. Finals MVP Jaylen Brown also secured a five-year, $286 million deal last summer. Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday are under contract through at least the 2025-26 season.

Despite these significant financial commitments, the Celtics are determined to keep their core players intact. This approach has led them to exceed the second apron luxury tax threshold, which limits roster transactions for high-spending teams.
Jayson Tatum, now 26, has already achieved remarkable success in his career. He is a five-time All-Star and has been selected to the All-NBA First Team for three consecutive seasons. Last season, he averaged 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and a career-high 4.9 assists per game while leading Boston to a 64-18 record.
Tatum's contributions have been crucial in Boston's recent success. He has led the team to two NBA Finals appearances and played in 113 playoff games. Over his career spanning 513 regular-season games, he has averaged 23.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.
Even before agreeing to Tatum's extension, Boston was projected to be over the second apron luxury tax threshold.
