Celtics' Mazzulla Warns: Confidence Alone Won't Seal Victory Against Pacers

Joe Mazzulla has cautioned the Boston Celtics that their 2-0 series lead against the Indiana Pacers is not a guarantee of progress. The Celtics secured a 126-110 victory on Thursday, extending their lead in the Eastern Conference finals. However, Mazzulla emphasised that confidence alone will not suffice to secure the series.

Indiana suffered a setback when star player Tyrese Haliburton sustained a hamstring injury. The Pacers are anxiously awaiting updates on his condition. Despite this, Mazzulla remains wary, recalling how Indiana overcame a similar deficit against the New York Knicks in the previous round.

Celtics' Victory Needs More Than Confidence

"The only thing we should be thinking about is, they were down 2-0 a series ago and brought it to Game 7," Mazzulla stated. "They do a great job protecting their home court. They're undefeated at home. It's going to take a lot more than confidence to get the job done."

Mazzulla stressed the importance of focusing on details, execution, and mindset when playing against a team like Indiana at home. "I know they're going to respond, so it's up to us to do the same," he added.

Jaylen Brown delivered an outstanding performance for the Celtics, scoring 40 points on the same day he missed out on an All-NBA selection. When asked about the snub, Brown responded, "We're two games from the Finals, so honestly, I don't have the time to give a f***."

Indiana's Challenge

Indiana now faces the challenge of competing without their key player against one of the NBA's top teams. T.J. McConnell highlighted Haliburton's importance: "He does so many things for our team. I think everyone has to move the ball more, get in the paint more. The ball movement has to be at another level."

McConnell acknowledged that replicating Haliburton's contribution would be difficult: "He gets 10 assists in his sleep, so it's hard for another person on our team to replicate that. It's a group effort when he goes down."

Awaiting Updates

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle provided an update on Haliburton's condition: "We'll know more [on Friday] and then probably more Saturday." The team remains hopeful as they await further news.

The Celtics will need to maintain their focus and execution as they prepare for the next games in Indiana. With both teams determined to advance, the series promises to be highly competitive.
