Brooklyn Nets Appoint Jordi Fernandez As New Head Coach In Strategic Move

The Brooklyn Nets have officially appointed Jordi Fernandez as their new head coach, marking him as the 24th individual to take up this role within the franchise. Fernandez, who previously served as the associate head coach for the Sacramento Kings, played a pivotal role in leading the Kings to notable achievements, including their first playoff appearance since 2006 and securing the third seed in the Western Conference last season. Despite a ninth-place finish in the West this season, Fernandez's tenure with the Kings was marked by a commendable record of 94-70 over two seasons.

The Nets, who concluded their season with a 32-50 record, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2018, announced Fernandez's hiring on April 22, 2024. This decision came after the mid-season firing of Jacque Vaughn and Kevin Ollie's interim tenure. The Nets expressed their enthusiasm for Fernandez's arrival in Brooklyn through a welcoming tweet.

Nets Hire Fernandez as Coach

Fernandez's coaching career is distinguished not only by his recent NBA roles but also by his international experience. As a native of Badalona, Spain, he has contributed significantly to Canada's men's national basketball team, leading them to a bronze medal at last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup. His coaching prowess was further highlighted by a victory over Team USA in the third-place game.

Sean Marks, the Nets' general manager, praised Fernandez for his diverse experiences and basketball acumen. Marks highlighted Fernandez's ability to implement effective processes and creative systems tailored to optimize team performance. Before his stint with the Kings, Fernandez was an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets for six seasons, contributing to four playoff appearances.

Fernandez's global coaching credentials extend beyond his NBA and Canadian team roles. He has served as the lead assistant for the Nigerian national team at the 2020 Olympics and worked with the Spanish national team during EuroBasket 2017 and the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships.

Expressing his excitement about joining the Nets, Fernandez emphasized his commitment to building a successful team that Brooklyn fans and the community can be proud of. He looks forward to working with the Nets' talented roster and driving the team forward to achieve collective success.
