Abu Dhabi Hosts EuroLeague Final Four For First Time In History
In a landmark move for international basketball, Abu Dhabi is set to host the prestigious Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four at the Etihad Arena, a first for both the city and the region. This groundbreaking partnership involves the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), Euroleague Basketball, and the Etihad Arena, facilitated by IMG, the league's strategic partner.
The strategic decision to bring the EuroLeague Final Four to Abu Dhabi underscores the city's burgeoning reputation as a premier destination for major international sports events. Abu Dhabi has previously played host to a range of high-profile events, including the FIFA Club World Cup, the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, and the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The city's venture into basketball has seen it hosting NBA pre-season games and the USA Basketball Showcase, highlighting its capability to support large-scale sporting events.
The Etihad Arena, a centerpiece of Abu Dhabi's entertainment offerings on Yas Island, is poised to provide an unparalleled experience for basketball fans. Scheduled for 23 and 25 May, the arena will see the season's top four teams battle it out for the championship. General public tickets, offering access to all four games, will go on sale starting 26 February, with more details to follow.
Euroleague Basketball President Dejan Bodiroga expressed gratitude towards Abu Dhabi for its faith in the EuroLeague, envisioning the Final Four as a splendid opportunity to introduce the league's electrifying atmosphere to a diverse new audience. This expansion aligns with Euroleague Basketball's objective of widening its fan base and enriching the fan experience in innovative locations.
Paulius Motiejunas, CEO of Euroleague Basketball, highlighted the significance of this alliance with Abu Dhabi in the league's global expansion efforts. This move not only brings the league's flagship event to a dynamic market but also leverages world-class facilities and a shared enthusiasm for hosting major international sports events.
Matt Dwyer, SVP of Sports Management at IMG, remarked on the historic nature of this partnership, emphasizing its role in extending Euroleague Basketball's international reach. He noted that Abu Dhabi's world-class Final Four experience would captivate both existing fans and newcomers to European basketball.
Abu Dhabi: A New Home for Basketball
Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, celebrated the emirate's emergence as a new hub for basketball in the Middle East. He highlighted Abu Dhabi's commitment to offering fans a top-notch Final Four experience at the Etihad Arena, complemented by the city's diverse attractions. The goal is to forge a strong connection between Euroleague Basketball and new audiences in Abu Dhabi, showcasing the city's prowess in hosting international sports events.
Located on the picturesque Yas Bay Waterfront, the Etihad Arena stands as a beacon for entertainment in the region. Having opened its doors in 2021, the arena quickly established itself as a leading venue, accommodating up to 12,000 basketball fans. Its wide-ranging events include UFC matches, NBA games, and concerts by global music stars.
Marcus Osborne, General Manager of Etihad Arena – Abu Dhabi, lauded the arena's state-of-the-art facilities and its capacity to deliver an exceptional basketball event, eagerly anticipating the arrival of European basketball's finest to the emirate.
This strategic initiative not only marks Euroleague Basketball's second venture into the Middle East, following a successful event in Dubai, but also marries the new market of Abu Dhabi with the league's longstanding European tradition. The collaboration is poised to create memorable experiences for fans and participants alike, while significantly contributing to the global growth of basketball.
