Dubai's RTA Launches Advanced Sensors On E-Bikes To Boost Mobility And Safety

Dubai has set a new benchmark in sustainable urban mobility with the launch of the Smart Assessment System for Cycling and E-Scooter Tracks by its Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). This venture aligns with the city's commitment to embracing eco-friendly transportation options and enhancing the safety and efficiency of its cycling and e-scooter tracks.

The initiative stands as a significant stride towards developing a green infrastructure, aiming to boost the use of sustainable transport modes. By fostering a safer and more efficient environment for cyclists and e-scooter users, Dubai is not only promoting healthier, eco-friendly travel alternatives but also cementing its status as a leading city in smart and sustainable mobility.

Featuring state-of-the-art sensors and cameras mounted on an electric bicycle, the system offers a non-intrusive yet accurate method for evaluating the performance of cycling and e-scooter tracks. This leap in technology ensures seamless monitoring while keeping the tracks open for users, thereby upholding the highest safety and convenience standards.

A key advantage of the new system is its ability to carry out proactive assessments, facilitating predictive and sustainable upkeep of the tracks. This approach significantly boosts resource management, curtails operational expenses, and minimizes the need for emergency repairs.

By incorporating international benchmarks such as the Track Pavement Condition Index, Track Asset Condition Index, and Ride Comfort Index, it marks a substantial evolution from older methods that relied solely on pavement conditions.

This system remarkably increases the efficiency of track inspections, with the capability to evaluate 120 km of tracks in just four hours—a stark contrast to the mere 2.25 km covered by traditional evaluations daily.

This improvement in speed, by 98%, coupled with the system's ability to conduct a thorough analysis of over 557 km of tracks within a month, substantially outperforms older methods by 92%. This rapid assessment process facilitates quicker decision-making and bolsters strategic planning for maintenance and asset management.

The Smart Assessment System signifies RTA's dedication to leveraging innovative technology for enhancing the road network's maintenance efficiency and ensuring the safety of soft mobility users. It plays a pivotal role in actualizing Dubai's Sustainable Mobility Vision 2030 by improving the urban experience through better infrastructure and operational effectiveness.
