Saudi Arabia Becomes The Largest Car Market In The GCC
The Saudi Arabian automotive sector has solidified its position as a leading market in the Gulf, with recent reports from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) indicating that the Kingdom accounts for over half of all car sales in the region. This achievement ranks Saudi Arabia among the top 20 global car markets, a testament to its growing influence and market demand. The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) disclosed that the country imported more than 160,000 vehicles during the 2022-2023 period, underscoring the robust appetite for automobiles within the Kingdom.
In a detailed breakdown of these figures, it was revealed that 93,199 cars were imported into Saudi Arabia in 2023 alone, with 66,870 vehicles imported in 2022. The primary exporters of vehicles to Saudi Arabia have been identified as Japan, India, Korea, the United States, and Thailand. Following their arrival, these imported vehicles are subject to rigorous inspection tests conducted by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) to ensure they meet the highest technical and safety standards.

Last year, SASO's vehicle inspection unit examined a total of 60,473 vehicles. In addition to vehicle inspections, SASO has also been proactive in issuing energy efficiency certificates for tyre products, with 18,150 certificates issued. Eng. Wael Al Dhiyab, spokesperson for SASO, emphasized the organization's dedication to maintaining high standards for tyre quality and safety in the Saudi market. He also highlighted SASO's efforts towards promoting energy efficiency and supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing product safety and contributing to economic development.
Electric Vehicles on the Rise
One of the most notable trends highlighted by Eng. Al Dhiyab is the significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) within the Kingdom. SASO reported a remarkable 465% increase in certificates of conformity for electric vehicles in 2023 compared to the previous year. This surge is indicative of SASO's crucial role in facilitating Saudi Arabia's transition towards clean energy sources. Furthermore, SASO issued 1,505 fuel efficiency labels for new light vehicles, marking another step towards promoting sustainable automotive solutions.
The statistics and efforts outlined by ZATCA and SASO reflect Saudi Arabia's dynamic automotive market and its commitment to embracing technological advancements and sustainability in transportation. The significant increase in electric vehicle certifications and the continuous import of cars from leading global manufacturers underscore the Kingdom's position as a burgeoning hub for automotive innovation and growth in the Gulf region.
