MEA's Automotive Industry Embraces Remanufacturing For Enhanced Sustainability

The recent Automechanika Dubai Network event, a biannual gathering that took place this week, has put a spotlight on the automotive industry's shift towards sustainability, with a particular focus on remanufacturing. This process, which involves restoring used automotive parts to a like-new condition, is gaining traction as a key component of the circular economy—a model aimed at minimizing waste and making the most of resources. It's noteworthy that approximately 86% of a vehicle can be recycled, including tyres, fluids, lubricants, and glass.

At the opening of the event, Mahmut Gazi Bilikozen, Portfolio Director at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, highlighted the success of Automechanika Dubai 2023. The event set new records with exhibitors from 61 countries and trade visitors from 156 countries. With sustainability taking center stage for the upcoming December edition, Bilikozen emphasized the importance of remanufacturing in achieving the industry's sustainability goals.

Remanufacturing Boosts MEA Auto Sustainability

The Global Automobile Remanufacturing Report forecasts the market to grow from $62.11 billion in 2023 to $68.71 billion this year, marking a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.6%. Despite its potential, adoption in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region remains limited. However, initiatives like the UAE Circular Economic Policy 2021-2031 are propelling sustainability forward in the automotive sector.

Maria Al Qasim, Assistant Undersecretary of Economic Research and Policy Sector at the Ministry of Economy, UAE, shared insights into the UAE's journey towards a sustainable economy. The country is focusing on sustainable manufacturing, green infrastructure, sustainable transportation, and sustainable food production and consumption as priority sectors.

Oweis Zahran, CEO of OWS Automotive, pointed out the environmental and economic benefits of remanufacturing. By extending the lifecycle of used parts and ensuring performance and durability that matches or exceeds that of new parts, remanufacturing presents a viable solution for both government and private entities seeking sustainability.

However, challenges such as consumer awareness, technological limitations, and regulatory frameworks still hinder widespread adoption. The speakers at Automechanika Dubai Network outlined innovative solutions and best practices as essential strategies for overcoming these obstacles. Educating vehicle owners on the benefits of remanufactured parts is also crucial for fostering growth in this sector.

Automechanika Dubai is set to return from December 10 to 12 at Dubai World Trade Centre. The regional trade show will cover eight specialized product categories and feature industry-leading events such as the Automechanika Dubai Awards and Innovation4 Mobility.
