Oman's First Electric SUV 'Mays Alive' To Hit Roads By End Of 2024

Oman's automotive sector is set to undergo a massive transformation. Wonder how? Oman's Mays Motors has announced plans to launch the country's first electric vehicle (EV), an SUV- Mays Alive, by the end of 2024. The unveiling of a prototype earlier this month in Muscat and North Batinah marked a pivotal moment for the Omani automotive industry.

Manufactured in Duqm, the Alive e-SUV is anticipated to be a game-changer in the regional automotive market, with a price tag of around $39,000. According to Zaabi, the team embarked on a global tour, visiting car factories in Italy, Germany, China, the USA, and India to finalize the specifications and design of Alive. This journey of innovation and perseverance culminated in the creation of a vehicle that Zaabi describes as not only a technological marvel but also a "miracle" achieved under constraints of limited resources and time.

Technical Specifications And Features

Alive sets itself apart with a large dashboard equipped with comprehensive displays and controls, including door functionalities. It offers an impressive driving range of approximately 510km, with the convenience of home charging. Compared to similar international models, which cost over $47,000, Alive is positioned as a competitively priced alternative. Zaabi emphasizes the introduction of new ideas and inventions in Alive, including the ability for drivers to interact with their vehicle, transforming it into a companion on the road.

Moreover, the SUV's carbon fiber body is described as being on par with global brands in terms of technology, while also incorporating locally available parts to reduce manufacturing costs. This approach not only facilitates quicker market entry but also underscores Mays Motors' commitment to nurturing the domestic automotive industry.

Production And Industry Impact

With an initial production target of 500 units, Mays Motors is contemplating an increase in production owing to higher than anticipated order volumes. This surge in interest underscores the market's readiness for innovative automotive solutions. The visit by Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, to Mays Motors' manufacturing facility highlights the government's support for such pioneering projects.

Zaabi is optimistic about the potential impact of manufacturing Alive on Oman's automotive landscape, envisioning an integrated industry that leverages local resources and generates employment opportunities. Currently, Mays Motors employs over 50 Omanis across various departments, contributing to the nation's economic diversification efforts.

The inspiration behind the name 'Mays’ pays homage to the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s horse, Maysore, blending national pride with innovation. As Oman's first EV, Mays Alive represents a significant milestone in the country’s automotive journey, promising a future where technology and tradition coalesce to drive sustainable development.
