Nissan To Use Low CO2 Emission Aluminium In Vehicles By 2030

Nissan Motor Co. has announced its commitment to using low CO2 emission aluminium parts made from green or recycled aluminium in both new and existing models starting from fiscal year 2024. The company aims to complete this transition by 2030, marking a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Aluminium constitutes approximately 10% of a vehicle's weight. By incorporating low CO2 emission aluminium, Nissan is taking a substantial step towards its goal of carbon neutrality across the entire lifecycle of its vehicles by 2050. Green aluminium, produced using non-fossil fuel-derived electricity, can reduce CO2 emissions during production by about 50%. Recycled aluminium offers an even greater reduction, cutting CO2 emissions by approximately 95%.

Nissan's Green Aluminium Shift by 2030

Nissan has been sourcing low CO2 emission aluminium sheets for vehicle panels produced in Japan from Kobe Steel, Ltd. and UACJ Corporation. Moving forward, the company plans to use low CO2 emission aluminium for all aluminium parts globally, including processed components, to further decrease CO2 emissions.

For all new models produced from fiscal year 2027, Nissan will exclusively use low CO2 emission aluminium. For current models, the company aims to start purchasing wheels, chassis parts, axle parts, and harness wires made from green aluminium in Japan, the United States, and Europe starting this fiscal year.

By the end of fiscal year 2024, Nissan expects that approximately 20% of the newly mined aluminium used for car parts in these markets will be replaced with green or recycled aluminium. This initiative underscores Nissan's dedication to sustainability and its vision for a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.
