Auto China Exhibition Highlights New Energy Vehicles And Green Innovation

The ongoing Auto China international automotive exhibition in Beijing is showcasing an impressive array of new technologies that are drawing significant attention. Among these, batteries offering a staggering 1,000km range and hydrogen-fueled vehicles stand out, highlighting the event's focus on smart mobility. Running from April 25 to May 4, the exhibition is set to feature 117 global premieres, 41 concept vehicles, and 278 types of new energy vehicles (NEVs), with nearly 500 companies from 13 countries participating in the auto parts zone alone, according to a report by Emirates News Agency (Wam).

NEVs are undeniably the stars of the show, with over 60% of the debut cars being powered by green energy. This surge in NEV popularity aligns with China's swift shift towards a greener economy, evidenced by NEVs making up over half of passenger vehicle sales in the first half of April, surpassing conventional fuel vehicles for the first time. Johan Annell, Partner and General Manager Beijing of advisory firm ARC Group, noted the rapid expansion of Chinese brands and their increasing appeal to consumers worldwide.

NEVs Lead at Auto China Show

Projections by CMC Auto Import & Export suggest that NEVs will constitute over 40% of China's vehicle exports by 2024, with total auto exports expected to rise by 15%-20% to 6 million units. Annell also highlighted Southeast Asia as a potential key region for future auto investment and cooperation. Meanwhile, a London-based auto designer for a China-UK joint venture remarked on the growing competence of Chinese brands, which is prompting European markets and manufacturers to aim for higher quality and lower prices.

CATL, a leading battery manufacturer, unveiled a new battery at the show that supports ultra-fast charging and offers a 1,000-km range. This innovation allows for a 600-km range with just 10 minutes of charging. Despite these advancements, a CATL spokesperson acknowledged ongoing challenges in achieving a sustainable future, including technological inequality and varying paces in the green energy transition across countries.

In a significant milestone for China's automotive industry, the new energy passenger car retail penetration rate exceeded 50 percent for the first time in early April. This achievement aligns with China's ambitious goal to surpass a 50 percent NEV penetration rate by 2035. Aion, an EV brand under Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC), has emerged as one of the fastest-growing automotive brands globally, thanks to its comprehensive R&D in EVs and intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs). GAC Aion General Manager Gu Huinan emphasized the brand's commitment to delivering high-quality, intelligent products that drive local industry development.

In December 2023, Aion's smart eco-factory achieved zero carbon emissions and was recognized as the Global Lighthouse Network's (GLN) sole NEV manufacturer member. The growth of China's NEV industry is not only driving domestic innovation but also creating opportunities globally. David Slump, President and CEO of Marelli, a leading global automotive supplier, highlighted the significance of "China speed" for innovation in the automotive sector.
