Mitsubishi Unveils New Hybrid Electric Models In Xpander Series

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has recently unveiled its latest innovation in the automotive industry with the global debut of new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) models for the Xpander and Xpander Cross crossover MPVs. These models, which are being produced at Mitsubishi Motors' Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand, are set to hit the market soon. The introduction of these HEV models marks a significant step in the evolution of the Xpander series, which has seen substantial global success since its inception.

The original Xpander, launched in 2017, skillfully blends the comfort and versatility of an MPV with the bold styling and robust performance of an SUV. Its counterpart, the Xpander Cross, introduced in 2019 as the series' top variant, builds on this foundation with enhanced features. Together, these models have captivated drivers worldwide, with over 130,000 units sold globally in 2022 alone.

The new HEV models elevate the Xpander series by integrating Mitsubishi Motors' renowned electrification and all-wheel control technologies. This advancement is not just about adding an electric motor; it's about redefining driving dynamics. The HEV system, inspired by Mitsubishi's plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), promises an eco-friendly yet thrilling driving experience through its innovative use of EV driving, hybrid driving, and regenerative braking.

At the heart of this technological leap is a newly developed system that intelligently switches between driving modes based on conditions and battery charge level. For instance, at startup and low speeds, the vehicle operates solely on electric power from the drive battery. As demands increase, such as during uphill drives or acceleration, it seamlessly transitions to hybrid mode, utilizing both the engine-generated electricity and drive battery power. High-speed journeys engage hybrid driving with engine support from the electric motor, while deceleration activates regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy back into electric power for storage.

This sophisticated HEV system ensures drivers can enjoy the serene and emission-free experience of an EV for short trips and the extended range and comfort of an HEV for longer journeys without worrying about battery life.

The core of this system features a combination of a generator and motor with a peak output of 85 kW and a 1.6L gasoline engine complemented by a dedicated drive battery developed exclusively for the Xpander HEV. This setup not only provides immediate torque for smooth starts and accelerations but also introduces an electric water pump in a Mitsubishi engine for the first time to minimize mechanical loss.

The newly engineered 1.6 L DOHC 16-valve MIVEC4 engine employs an Atkinson cycle for improved fuel combustion efficiency. This innovation leads to a fuel economy improvement of about 10% over CVT models and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 34% in urban settings according to NEDC tests, with a combined urban and extra-urban driving improvement of around 15%.

General Automotive Company (GAC), as the authorized dealership for Mitsubishi Motors in Oman, will be showcasing these groundbreaking HEV models across its showrooms nationwide including locations in Muscat, Mabelah, Barka, Sohar, Nizwa, Ibri, Sur, Jalal Bani Bu Ali, and Salalah.

With these advancements, Mitsubishi Motors continues to lead by example in the automotive industry, offering vehicles that not only meet but exceed modern drivers' expectations for efficiency, performance, and environmental responsibility.
