Masdar City Launches Trials For Level 4 Autonomous Vehicles To Enhance Smart Mobility

Masdar City has initiated trials for level 4 autonomous vehicles (AV) in collaboration with Solutions+, a Mubadala company. This project, supervised by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), involves registering, testing, and approving AVs to ensure they meet safety standards and align with Abu Dhabi's vision for smart mobility. The initiative highlights Masdar City's role as a global hub for clean technology and its commitment to advancing autonomous transport.

The level 4 automation represents a significant advancement in AV technology, allowing vehicles to operate independently within designated areas. Masdar City provides a real-world testing ground for these advanced vehicles, inviting global manufacturers to trial their technologies within its integrated urban environment. This step is crucial in demonstrating the emirate's dedication to innovation and future-oriented technology.

Masdar City Trials Level 4 Autonomous Vehicles

Ahmed Baghoum, CEO of Masdar City, expressed pride in leading the development of this critical future technology. "The announcement of level 4 testing marks a substantial leap forward in AV capabilities and we are proud that Masdar City is once again leading the field in the development of such a critical future technology," he stated. This initiative aligns with Masdar City's vision of shaping future cities through innovation and environmental responsibility.

The proof of concept phase offers an opportunity to evaluate the technology's performance under real-world conditions specific to the UAE. The vehicles follow a 2.4km test route connecting key locations like Siemens building and My City Centre Masdar mall. Initially, safety officers accompany the AVs, but they will transition to full autonomy managed from a remote control room as testing progresses.

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of ITC, highlighted this initiative as a milestone in Abu Dhabi’s vision for future transport technologies. "This initiative marks a key milestone in Abu Dhabi’s vision to embrace future transport technologies," he said. It supports creating an integrated regulatory environment that fosters innovation and accelerates smart mobility adoption.

The trials aim to modify AVs according to UAE's operational needs and infrastructure requirements. Performance, safety, and adaptability will be assessed before considering broader deployment under Abu Dhabi Government regulations. This underscores Masdar City's leadership in driving change through its Smart Mobility Cluster.

Collaborative Efforts for Innovation

Ali Alyafei, COO at Solutions+, noted the partnership with Masdar City allows testing AVs in a unique environment combining advanced infrastructure with sustainability commitments. "This collaboration not only helps refine our technology but also demonstrates how innovative mobility solutions can contribute to building smarter, more efficient urban ecosystems aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative," he remarked.

This project is part of Masdar City's ongoing efforts since introducing first-generation AVs in 2010. By serving as a testbed for cutting-edge technologies, it helps shape sustainable urban transportation's future while positioning itself as a key enabler of clean-tech advancements globally.

The trials offer invaluable insights into global autonomous transportation development by observing how these vehicles perform amid UAE's infrastructure and climate conditions. As the programme evolves, it aims to enhance competitiveness and support Abu Dhabi's ambition to become a global hub for smart cities and sustainable mobility.
