Dubai's RTA Contracts To Upgrade 22 Bus Stations And Depots
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has embarked on an ambitious three-year initiative to revamp 22 bus facilities, encompassing 16 stations and 6 depots. This comprehensive overhaul aims to elevate the infrastructure of these sites, integrating a range of passenger amenities, waiting areas, service offices for drivers, overnight parking for buses, maintenance workshops, and specialized inspection and maintenance bays. The RTA's statement highlighted the project's goal to significantly enhance the public transport service quality, offering a seamless and enriched service experience to users.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the strategic importance of developing bus stations and depots in bolstering Dubai's public transport infrastructure. The initiative seeks to encourage more residents to choose public transport for their daily commutes by transcending traditional station functionalities. Al Tayer pointed out that the project aims not only to facilitate passenger movement but also to augment the overall travel experience through comprehensive services aimed at increasing passenger satisfaction. This includes improving access for people with disabilities, installing bicycle racks, and ensuring smooth connectivity with Dubai Metro and taxi services.

The project targets the upgrade of 16 bus stations across Dubai, with nine in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai. Key locations include Mall of the Emirates, Sabkha, Jebel Ali, Al Quoz, Ibn Battuta, Hatta, Gold Souk, Al Qusais, Deira City Centre, Al Ghubaiba, Union, Al Satwa, Al Rashdiya, Abu Hail, Etisalat, and Al Karama. Upgrades will focus on renovating passenger terminals and building facades while implementing system infrastructure improvements. Additionally, prayer rooms will be introduced at selected stations.
Furthermore, six bus depots are set for development at Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais, Al Ruwyyah, Al Aweer, Jebel Ali, and Al Quoz. These enhancements will include revamping inspection lanes, introducing engine wash lanes, improving drainage systems, maintaining floors, installing new system infrastructures, and rehabilitating public facilities. Residential quarters for drivers will be provided at Jebel Ali and Al Quoz Depots. Exterior works across all stations will involve installing traffic signals and sidewalks, upgrading external lighting, conducting infrastructure work for security systems, redesigning bus parking yards at five stations, and adding initial test zones at Al Khawaneej, Al Ruwyyah, and Al Aweer depots.
This extensive project by the RTA underscores Dubai's commitment to advancing its public transport facilities. By enhancing infrastructure and services at bus stations and depots, Dubai aims to provide a more attractive and efficient public transport system that meets the needs of its residents and encourages a shift towards sustainable mobility options.
