DFI Retail Group Advances Sustainability With Hong Kong's First 24-Ton Electric Truck
HONG KONG SAR - In a significant move towards sustainable development, DFI Retail Group ("DFI") has announced that its subsidiary, Wellcome Supermarket ("Wellcome"), has acquired a European-made 24-ton electric truck. This initiative positions Wellcome as the first retail company in Hong Kong to integrate such a vehicle into its operations. The acquisition aligns with DFI's ambitious sustainability goals, which include halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The introduction of the electric truck by Wellcome is expected to have a substantial positive impact on the environment. Over a span of ten years, this vehicle is projected to save around 264,000 liters of diesel compared to traditional fuel trucks. This translates to a reduction of approximately 538 tons of carbon emissions, an effect equivalent to the annual carbon absorption capacity of nearly 24,710 trees. Moreover, the electric truck contributes to lowering noise pollution, offering a quieter alternative to diesel-powered vehicles.

Mr. Michael Haas, Supply Chain Director of DFI Retail Group, expressed pride in achieving this milestone through their partnership with Scania. He emphasized the company's commitment to evaluating the commercial viability of electric trucks and exploring fleet electrification as part of building a green supply chain.
Mr. Darren Chan, Managing Director of Wellcome Hong Kong and Macau, highlighted Wellcome's dedication to environmental responsibility. He noted that alongside providing quality products and services, Wellcome is focused on reducing operational carbon emissions. The company has also installed an extensive solar panel system at its fresh food center, further underscoring its commitment to sustainability.
DFI Retail Group's efforts extend beyond the deployment of electric trucks in Hong Kong. In Taiwan, IKEA, operated by the Group, introduced the first 26-ton electric truck last year. DFI continues to review its operations for sustainable development opportunities and is exploring the expansion of its green fleet through direct purchases and collaborations with third-party logistics providers. Balancing operational needs with environmental responsibilities remains a key focus for DFI as it navigates the future challenges of logistics.
The adoption of electric trucks by Wellcome and IKEA exemplifies DFI Retail Group's proactive approach to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development within the retail sector.
