Bentley has taken a significant step forward in its journey towards environmental sustainability by hosting the world's first global media drive powered by sustainable eFuel. This landmark event, held in Switzerland, showcased the launch of the fourth-generation Continental GT Speed coupe and convertible.
It marked a pioneering use of eFuel, demonstrating its compatibility with traditional combustion engines. A total of 157 international guests experienced the innovation first-hand, driving the new models while contributing to a reduced environmental footprint.

eFuel, a fully synthetic liquid fuel, represents a major advancement in sustainable automotive fuels. It is manufactured using renewable energy sources and carbon dioxide captured from the air or biogenic sources.
In this instance, the eFuel was crafted at the Haru Oni pilot plant in Chile, a facility established by an international consortium led by Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) Global, with significant backing from Porsche. The unique process involves combining biogenic CO2 with hydrogen obtained from the electrolysis of water, which is then converted into methanol and further refined into gasoline. Bentley's decision to use a blend of 75% eFuel and 25% ordinary gasoline for the media drive significantly reduced the CO2 emissions from the event.
The drive event not only highlighted the environmental benefits of eFuel but also showcased the impressive performance of the Continental GT Speed. Participants navigated through four iconic mountain passes in Switzerland, covering a distance of 8,000 miles and climbing a total of 1.4 million feet. Despite these demanding conditions, the use of eFuel and renewable electricity for charging hybrid batteries enabled a 93% reduction in CO2 vehicle emissions, showcasing the potential for significant environmental improvements in automotive events.
A Close Look at Sustainable Fuel Production
The production of eFuel is a critical component of Bentley's sustainability strategy, emphasizing the brand's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The Haru Oni pilot plant’s location in Chile was strategically chosen due to its strong and consistent winds, which are ideal for generating renewable electricity.
This electricity is then used to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, which, when combined with captured CO2, results in methanol.
