Qatar's Hamad International Airport Launches Autonomous Vehicles Trials

In a pioneering move for the region, Qatar Aviation Services (QAS), along with MATAR and the Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), a member of the Qatar Foundation, is initiating trials for cutting-edge autonomous transportation technologies at Hamad International Airport (DOH), marking a first for the region.

The launch of this autonomous vehicle trial marks a significant milestone in the integration of autonomous technology within the aviation industry, aligning with Qatar's National Vision 2030, aiming to develop a sustainable and technology-driven economy.

This venture into the realm of autonomous vehicles, including buses and baggage tractors, kicked off on February 19. These vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art features such as GPS, AI systems, intelligent sensors, and lidars, aimed at boosting operational safety and efficiency.

These autonomous vehicles are not only equipped to operate around the clock under various weather conditions but also come with features for real-time monitoring and automated charging.

This innovative project showcases a significant leap towards operational excellence and sustainability in airside operations. Through this initiative, Hamad International Airport demonstrates its commitment to leading the charge in integrating technology and mobility, setting a new benchmark for airports globally.

Hamad Ali Al Khater, the Chief Operating Officer of Hamad International Airport, expressed his enthusiasm for this groundbreaking initiative. "Our airport is proud to lead the way by trialing autonomous vehicles. This initiative reflects our dedication to enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability. We are excited to lead the way into a future where technology and mobility seamlessly converge and look forward to a successful outcome through collaboration with our key stakeholders," he stated.

Murat Nursel, Senior Vice President at QAS, shared, "We have an ambitious vision for the years ahead—one that demands a company-wide commitment to execution and innovation. At QAS, we are driven by a relentless pursuit of advancement and excellence. The testing of autonomous vehicles, in collaboration with MATAR and Qatar Science & Technology Park, underscores our dedication to supporting our nation's vision while enhancing operational efficiency. We remain steadfast in our mission to redefine excellence, delivering unparalleled value to both our customers and employees."

Dr. Jack Lau, President of QSTP, highlighted the role of this collaboration in advancing technology and driving digital transformation within the aviation sector, a domain known for its complexity and high-risk operations.

"At QSTP, we are proud to support the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies that redefine industries. This collaboration demonstrates not only our commitment to advancing technology but also to driving the digital transformation of one of the world's most complex and high-risk sectors—aviation.

"The Level 4 autonomous vehicle solutions being trialed at Hamad International Airport, developed within QSTP to shape the future of smart mobility. As we push the boundaries of technological excellence, initiatives like this align seamlessly with Qatar National Vision 2030, reinforcing our collective role in fostering a sustainable, tech-driven economy," Lau explained.
