Audi Transforms Customer Experience with Groundbreaking Global Model Naming Strategy
In a move to simplify its model naming strategy, Audi has announced that it will now use a consistent alphanumeric system across its global portfolio. This change means that the traditional method of differentiating models based on their powertrain - electric or combustion engine - through specific numbers is being discarded. Instead, Audi will employ a combination of letters and numbers that convey the model's size and positioning more directly to consumers worldwide.
"This decision is the result of intensive discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers," says Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. "Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio. We choose the names of our models in a way that reveals size and positioning at first glance."

Unified Naming Across Drivetrains
The revised naming format involves the use of one or more letters, followed by a number to indicate the vehicle's positioning within the Audi lineup. The letter 'A' will denote low-floor vehicles, while 'Q' will signify high-floor models such as SUVs. The numerical component, ranging from one to eight, will classify the vehicle irrespective of whether it's powered by an electric battery or an internal combustion engine. This marks a significant shift from the previous system where even and odd numbers were used to distinguish between different drivetrain technologies.
In addition to size and model positioning, Audi’s all-electric and combustion-engine vehicles will now share the same alphanumeric designation. To further differentiate between various models and versions within the same segment, Audi will utilize the car's body style, such as Avant, Sedan, or Sportback, alongside the powertrain code, like e-tron for electric vehicles and TFSI for those with traditional engines.
Implementation of the New System
The Audi A6 will be the first model to adopt the new naming strategy. This model, equipped with a combustion engine, symbolizes Audi's rich heritage in the full-size segment and is set to be unveiled to the world on March 4. The naming strategy will allow for clear differentiation between the combustion-engine A6 Avant TFSI and its electric counterpart, the A6 Avant e-tron, both of which are slated for release in the Middle East in the fourth quarter of 2025. Audi has clarified that there will be no retroactive changes to the names of models that are currently available on the market.
With this strategic overhaul in model nomenclature, Audi aims to offer a more straightforward and intuitive approach for customers globally. By doing so, the company seeks to strengthen its brand alignment and ensure that its diverse range of vehicles is easily navigable for consumers, regardless of the underlying powertrain technology. This initiative reflects Audi's commitment to adapting to customer feedback and evolving market demands, reinforcing its position in the competitive automotive landscape.
