Abu Dhabi Positions Itself As A Global Hub For Smart Mobility And Autonomous Technologies

Abu Dhabi is establishing itself as a leader in smart mobility, driven by innovative policies and initiatives like the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries (SAVI) Cluster.

The emirate's focus on advanced technologies is boosting economic diversification. Non-oil sectors have grown over 6.6% annually, making up about 57% of GDP. This growth is part of the Falcon Economy strategy, which emphasises competitiveness and sustainability. Al Zaabi stated, "Abu Dhabi is leveraging advanced technologies as catalyst for economic diversification and competitiveness."

Public-private partnerships (PPP) are crucial in Abu Dhabi's strategy. They connect government infrastructure with business ambitions, reducing risks and speeding up commercialisation. Al Zaabi explained that this model turns emerging technologies into growth engines. The SAVI Cluster alone aims to create 40,000 jobs and add AED44 billion to GDP by 2045.

SAVI has established three test zones: Nibras Al Ain for air technologies, Yas Island for land systems, and Mussafah for sea applications. These zones provide a comprehensive ecosystem for developing autonomous technologies from prototypes to real-world use.

Abu Dhabi collaborates with international companies like GRIDSERVE and EHang to advance manufacturing and electric vehicle systems. The Abu Dhabi Investment Office plans to sign 13 new agreements during ADAW to launch pilot projects in land, air, and sea mobility.

Several milestones have already been achieved in autonomous technology development. These include public eVTOL test flights with Archer and passenger drone trials with EHang. Additionally, the UAE's first parcel delivery by autonomous aerial drones marks significant progress in logistics across the emirate.

Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, highlighted these efforts at the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Summit. He noted that strategic policy alignment and public-private partnerships are key to transforming Abu Dhabi into a hub for autonomous technologies.

Al Zaabi emphasised the importance of advanced technologies in addressing global needs. He said these efforts enhance Abu Dhabi’s status as an economic powerhouse and attract talent and entrepreneurship in future industries. "By capitalising on advanced technologies to address pressing needs in the world," he added.

The Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), led by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, plays a vital role in supporting start-ups in smart mobility. It helps streamline requirements for testing autonomous systems while ensuring safety standards are met across all operations.

Ranked among the world's smartest cities, Abu Dhabi is becoming a centre for advanced industries like AI and New Energy. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure supports this transformation into a leading hub for finance and manufacturing sectors globally recognised for innovation.
