Abu Dhabi Mobility Expands Autonomous Taxi Operations To Al Reem And Al Maryah Islands

Abu Dhabi's ambitious plans to bolster its smart mobility system have taken a significant leap forward with the integration of autonomous taxi services on Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands. This move, spearheaded by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), and in partnership with WeRide, Uber, and Tawasul Transport, underscores the emirate's commitment to developing an AI-driven transport ecosystem.

The deployment of autonomous taxis in these densely populated areas marks a strategic expansion of services that were already operational on Al Saadiyat and Yas Islands, including routes to Zayed International Airport. Since its inception on the Uber platform in December 2024, the autonomous taxi fleet has seen a significant increase, tripling in size and showcasing Abu Dhabi's progressive approach to embracing sustainable mobility solutions. The initiative is part of a broader vision to make 25% of all trips in the emirate smart by 2040, highlighting the commitment to a more sustainable and efficient transport network.

Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands, known for their bustling financial, residential, and commercial activities, present an ideal backdrop to demonstrate the sophisticated capabilities of WeRide's autonomous driving technology. The complex traffic scenarios and high vehicular density in these areas offer a unique challenge and opportunity for enhancing the reliability and accessibility of mobility solutions. The expansion of autonomous taxi services to these islands is a response to the growing demand for efficient transport amidst increasing traffic congestion, aiming to improve the overall travel experience in Abu Dhabi.

This strategic expansion of autonomous taxi services to about half of Abu Dhabi’s critical regions exemplifies the emirate's comprehensive strategy to integrate AI and sustainable mobility solutions across key sectors. Such efforts not only enhance the emirate's transport network but also improve residents' quality of life, propelling Abu Dhabi towards its goal of becoming a model for smart urban development in the Middle East.

WeRide's significant presence in Abu Dhabi, boasting the largest fleet outside the US and China, reflects the emirate's strategic positioning as an innovation hub for mobility. Jennifer Li, Chief Financial Officer and Head of International at WeRide, expressed gratitude for the support from the Integrated Transport Centre and highlighted the partnership with Uber as a driving force for their expansion and success in the region.

Mohamad Jardaneh, Head of Autonomous Mobility, Middle East at Uber, shared his enthusiasm for the expansion of autonomous vehicle services to more areas in Abu Dhabi. "Just as Uber helped millions experience electric vehicles for the first time, 2025 will be the year we bring AV technology into the mainstream."

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of the Integrated Transport Centre, articulated the significance of this expansion in achieving Abu Dhabi's vision for a smarter, safer mobility system. He emphasized the importance of extending autonomous vehicle deployment to high-density areas to offer a more efficient travel experience, aligning with the emirate’s smart transport strategy.

Abu Dhabi's leadership in smart mobility is further demonstrated by becoming the first city in the MENA region to commercially operate autonomous vehicles. With the largest active fleet of 44 autonomous vehicles serving key locations, Abu Dhabi's initiative is a testament to successful strategic partnerships with technology and mobility leaders. These efforts contribute significantly to the development of an advanced smart mobility ecosystem, reflecting the emirate’s vision for supporting sustainable urban development goals.
