Abu Dhabi Airports To Develop Emirate-Wide Vertiport Network Enhancing Air Mobility By 2026

Abu Dhabi Airports has been given a significant role in developing vertiport infrastructure, operations, and commercial readiness. This initiative aims to strengthen the emirate's status as a leader in advanced air mobility. The project is set to introduce electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into Abu Dhabi's transport network, with initial flights anticipated by 2026.

The plan includes over 10 public vertiports at key urban and transit locations. The first phase will focus on Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI). These sites will facilitate the initial eVTOL routes, enhancing connectivity between airports and the city. This development is part of a broader strategy to integrate eVTOLs into Abu Dhabi's transport system.

Abu Dhabi Airports to Launch Vertiport Network

Abu Dhabi Airports has teamed up with Skyports Infrastructure for designing, constructing, and engineering each vertiport. Once built, both parties will manage operations such as passenger handling, security processing, cargo operations, and integration with eVTOL operators. Skyports Infrastructure is renowned for its work in vertiport infrastructure within the Advanced Air Mobility industry.

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, stated: "This mandate is a bold vote of confidence in our ability to drive the future of next generation mobility. With the evolution of technology and the growing demand for efficient, green mobility, air taxis represent a natural extension of our role as an airport operator.

"The strong collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, Integrated Transport Centre, and the General Civil Aviation Authority has been instrumental in turning this ambitious initiative into a reality, paving the way toward an even more connected, innovative, and sustainable future for the UAE."

The battery-powered eVTOL aircraft will be piloted and can carry up to four passengers. They offer a quieter and cleaner alternative to traditional helicopters. Their noise footprint is about 100 times quieter than helicopters when cruising overhead. This aligns with the UAE's commitment to environmentally responsible transport innovation.

Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure commented: "This vertiport network is a key component of Abu Dhabi's AAM strategy. With Skyports already having active vertiport projects under development both in the UAE and beyond, we feel we are in the best position to apply our previous knowledge and expertise and help bring the benefits of AAM to the UAE's largest emirate. We look forward to being able to facilitate eVTOL flights in Abu Dhabi in the near future."

Initial routes will have limited range due to current battery technology but advancements are expected over time. This could enable longer journeys connecting places like Al Ain with Zayed International Airport. Such developments would support inter-emirate travel.

Integrating eVTOLs into complex airspace environments requires a coordinated approach prioritising safety alongside large commercial aircraft. By aligning with national innovation frameworks, Abu Dhabi Airports plays a crucial role in shaping future mobility solutions.

Airport connectivity is essential for establishing an effective air taxi ecosystem. As these efforts progress, they position Abu Dhabi as a global hub for advanced air mobility while promoting sustainable transportation solutions across the region.
