UAE Airports Record 36.5 Million Passengers In Q1 2024, Marking Significant Growth
The UAE's civil aviation sector has achieved significant growth in the first quarter 2024, recording an impressive influx of 36.5 million passengers, as reported by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA This figure represents a substantial 14.7% growth compared to the same timeframe in the previous year underscoring the dynamic expansion of the sector.
The comprehensive passenger statistics disclosed by the GCAA include 10,723,639 arrivals, 10,874,232 departures, and 14,944,466 transit passengers, highlighting the UAE's role as a global aviation hub. Alongside passenger growth, the air cargo sector also experienced a noteworthy surge, with a 32% increase in volume, handling a total of 1.1 million tons of cargo in the first quarter of 2024. The breakdown of cargo volumes includes 269,526 tons of imports, 119,490 tons of exports, and 714,446 tons of transit goods. National carriers played a pivotal role, accounting for approximately 68% of the total air cargo movement during this period.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of GCAA, credited the sector's robust growth to the effective collaboration between the Authority and its partners across federal and local governments. He emphasized that the substantial growth rates demonstrate the sector's resilience, competitive edge, and potential for future growth.
One of the key strategies driving this success has been the strategic opening of new markets for national carriers. This has been achieved through 189 air transport agreements with countries around the globe, fostering international partnerships and bolstering the open skies policy.
