Türkiye Leads As Top Developing Travel Destination In Southern Europe

In a significant leap forward for its travel and tourism sector, Türkiye has been named the best-developing country in Southern Europe, as per a recent report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in partnership with the University of Surrey. Climbing eight spots to secure the 29th position among 119 countries, Türkiye outshines on the global stage, according to the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024 report.

Scoring an impressive 4.39%, Türkiye not only exceeds the global average by 10.6% but also surpasses the European average by 3%, marking its prominence in the travel and tourism landscape both worldwide and in Europe. This notable ascent has positioned Türkiye at the forefront in the Southern Europe category, alongside other notable destinations such as Croatia, Italy, Malta, and Spain. The country’s upward trajectory in the index also reflects a 3.1% improvement from its 2019 standing, highlighting significant growth and development in its travel and tourism sector.

Türkiye's remarkable progress is evident across various indicators within the TTDI. The country has seen a 14% enhancement in travel and tourism prioritization, vaulting 18 places to become the second highest globally in this metric. Furthermore, its air transport infrastructure has also received a considerable boost, moving up 10 places to rank eighth worldwide. Cultural assets maintain a strong position at 13th place, while advancements in non-leisure resources and natural resources have seen Türkiye climb seven and 24 places, respectively, showcasing the country's rich cultural and natural offerings.

The WEF, which updated the index in 2022 to focus more on sustainability, has renamed it from the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) to the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI). This shift underscores the increasing importance of sustainable and resilient development within the travel and tourism industry.

Global Tourism Trends and Türkiye’s Opportunities

The report indicates a positive outlook for the global travel and tourism sector, with international tourist arrivals expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024. After a significant downturn due to the pandemic, the industry is on a path to recovery, with a projected 88% of the 2019 level in international tourist arrivals achieved in 2023. The travel and tourism sector's contribution to the global GDP is also nearing pre-pandemic figures, standing at $9.9 trillion.

While the Middle East shows the highest recovery rates in international tourist arrivals, Europe, along with Africa and the Americas, demonstrates strong resilience, boasting a recovery rate of approximately 90% in 2023. This resilience is attributed to robust intraregional travel flows and a diverse range of offerings catering to international travelers.

Despite these achievements, the report suggests areas where Türkiye could further enhance its travel and tourism sector. These include improving price competitiveness, tourist services and infrastructure, safety and security, human resources and labor market, demand sustainability, and the business environment. Addressing these areas could elevate Türkiye's position even further, solidifying its status as a leading destination in the global travel and tourism industry.

The results of the TTDI 2024 report signify a pivotal moment for Türkiye’s travel and tourism sector. Through strategic improvements and leveraging its current success, Türkiye has the potential to continue its ascent in the global rankings, attracting more international visitors and contributing to the country’s economic growth and cultural exchange.
