SolitAir Launches Direct Flight Service To Urumqi, Strengthening UAE-China Trade Connections
UAE-based SolitAir has recently inaugurated a direct flight service to Urumqi, China, marking a significant extension of its international network. This move not only broadens the airline's reach, but also enhances trade links between the UAE and China, two of the globe's economic powerhouses.
Currently, SolitAir operates with a versatile fleet of five Boeing 737-800 BCF freighters, with plans to introduce two additional aircraft by the end of August 2025. Looking ahead, the airline has ambitious plans to expand its fleet to 20 aircraft by 2027, aiming to connect over 50 cities within a six-hour flight radius from Dubai. This growth strategy underscores SolitAir's commitment to enhancing its service offerings and playing a pivotal role in global trade facilitation.

Hamdi Osman, founder and CEO of SolitAir, stated, "China is a cornerstone in our vision to connect the Global South through fast, reliable and tech-driven air cargo solutions." He highlighted the deep-seated strategic partnership between the UAE and China, underscoring how this new connection will facilitate trade and fortify the economic bridge linking the two nations. This initiative is expected to spur the continuous flow of goods and propel prosperity throughout the Global South.
Urumqi's strategic position as a critical trade and transportation hub, historically celebrated as the last significant stopover on the Silk Road, is pivotal to this new service. The city's proximity to key Belt and Road Initiative routes positions it as an essential logistics gateway.
This is particularly relevant as demand surges for cross-border e-commerce, timely shipments, and high-value commodities. By connecting Dubai directly with Urumqi, SolitAir aims to provide quicker transit times for urgent cargo, including electronics, pharmaceuticals, fashion items, and perishables, thereby addressing a crucial need on this key trade route.
The addition of Urumqi to SolitAir's network is not just about adding another destination; as Osman points out, "It's opening a gateway into western China's fast-growing logistics and industrial ecosystem." This expansion is seen as an opportunity to tap into the burgeoning Chinese market and to bolster the UAE's position as a leading logistics hub.
SolitAir's operational base is a sizable 22,000 sqm logistics facility located at Dubai World Central (DWC), from where it conducts express middle-mile services spanning major trade corridors across the Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, STAN-countries, and now, China.
With China being the UAE's largest trading partner, bilateral trade exceeded US $101.8 billion in 2024, marking a 7% increase from the year before, and is poised for further growth in 2025. The launch of the direct service to Urumqi is a testament to SolitAir's strategic vision of enhancing connectivity between dynamic economies and fostering growth and prosperity in the Global South.
