Saudi Arabia Introduces New Driving Regulations For Tourists

For international tourists visiting Saudi Arabia, navigating the country just got easier. Under newly introduced regulations, tourists can now legally drive using their home country's license or an international driving permit (IDP), provided they meet specific conditions.

This move—announced by the General Directorate of Traffic in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism—aims to enhance the travel experience for visitors and aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, the kingdom's ambitious initiative to attract 100 million annual tourists by the end of the decade.

Tourists must meet the following requirements to drive legally in Saudi Arabia:
- A valid international driving permit (IDP) or a home country driver's license (if an English translation is required).
- A passport with an active tourist visa.
- Comprehensive vehicle insurance covering their stay.

Additionally, visitors must complete a mandatory road safety course, an online orientation available in multiple languages. The course covers Saudi traffic laws, road signs, and cultural driving norms, ensuring tourists understand local driving etiquette. Upon completion, tourists receive a digital certificate valid for three months.

Application Process and Age Requirements

- Minimum age: 21 years for cars, 23 years for motorcycles.
- Tourists must apply for driving authorization through the official Visit Saudi website or mobile app.
- Approvals take 24 to 48 hours on average.

The new driving regulations only apply to short-term visitors. Expatriates on work or student visas must still obtain a Saudi driving license through the standard process.
