Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Unveiled: A Marine Paradise For Divers

Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coastline is emerging as a new and exciting diving destination. With its well-preserved coral reefs, diverse marine life, and ancient coral formations, the region offers a unique underwater experience. Dr. Ivor Williams, Director of Marine Planning and Monitoring at Red Sea Global, highlights the striking topography and diversity of coral formations in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea, setting it apart from other diving spots in the region.

The area boasts a sprawling 2,000 km2 lagoon and a wider coastal shelf, providing a habitat for a variety of marine species. The Red Sea's offshore reef areas are vibrant and feature caves and swim-throughs that add to the diversity and concentration of marine life. One of the significant draws of Saudi's deep-sea experience is the discovery of ancient corals, some several meters across and hundreds of years old. These corals have shown resilience to rising ocean temperatures, unlike reefs worldwide that have been devastated by such events.

The Red Sea also offers opportunities to spot rare and endangered species, including hawksbill and green sea turtles, the critically endangered Halavi guitarfish, the endangered humphead wrasse, and the at-risk humpback dolphin. Dugongs, zebra and whale sharks, and dugongs, also known as "Sea Cows," can occasionally be seen in the area.

Efforts are underway to conserve the marine life and environment in the Red Sea. Red Sea Global is implementing sustainable practices and limiting the number of visitors to minimize the impact on the environment. Construction and development activities are planned to avoid disturbing important nesting sites of endangered species like hawksbill sea turtles.

The company is also banning single-use plastics and providing educational activities to raise awareness about marine ecosystems. The best times to dive in Saudi's Red Sea vary throughout the year, offering unique opportunities to witness various natural phenomena. For example, summer is the peak nesting season for hawksbill turtles, while green turtles nest from late July to September. Summer is also a prime time for reef fish spawning, attracting different grouper, snapper, and emperors to breed.

Red Sea Global has recently launched two brands, WAMA and Galexea, that offer exclusive water sports and diving activities for guests. These activities include kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, foiling, and kite surfing. Galexea is working with the Saudi Water Sports and Diving Federation to ensure that all facilities meet tourism standards and set the blueprint for future diving development worldwide. Dr. Williams, being a passionate diver himself, has explored around 200 different reef sites across the Red Sea area. He recommends exploring the outer reef walls and offshore reefs, which offer spectacular diving experiences with excellent water clarity. Inshore and lagoon sites provide a different experience but can be more turbid.Dr. Williams's favorite underwater creature to spot is the Bumphead parrotfish, which is the largest parrotfish in the world. These creatures can grow to over a meter in length and have distinctive features like huge beaks and bulbous foreheads. While not considered endangered, they are vulnerable due to excessive fishing.

The Red Sea still has areas where Bumphead parrotfish can be regularly seen, and spotting them is a thrilling experience. The abundance of marine life, vibrant reefs, and diverse experiences make Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast a paradise for divers and photographers. With its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable practices, the Red Sea is poised to become a leading destination for underwater exploration.
