Musandam's Historical Gems Attract 25,000+ Visitors In 2023: Discover Why
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism announced that Musandam Governorate's historical sites drew 25,009 visitors in 2023. By April 2024, the number had reached 23,535. Maryam bint Ahmed Al Shehiya, head of the Craft Heritage Section, highlighted Khasab Fort, Al-Kamazra Fort, Bukha Fort, and Dibba Fort as key attractions for both Arab and foreign tourists.
Musandam is a rugged peninsula at Oman's northern tip. It offers a unique travel experience with its dramatic coastline, majestic mountains, and clear waters. Nature lovers and adventure seekers find it especially appealing. The region also provides a taste of Omani culture.

Investment Opportunities in Heritage Sites
Maryam bint Ahmed Al Shehiya emphasised the investment potential in these sites for individuals and private sectors. This aligns with Oman’s tenth five-year plan to enhance sustainable tourism and boost the national economy. The initiative aims to develop heritage, culture, and arts through public-private partnerships.
Bassam bin Muhammad bin Abdullah al Kamzari, head of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, revealed that construction began this year on the Dibba Archaeological Visitor Center. The project is funded by OQ Company and the Musandam Governor's Office. Discovered in 2012, the site dates back to the first millennium BC and includes early Iron Age tombs, skeletons, and artifacts.
What are some places you could visit?
Efforts are ongoing to support private museums by constructing modern buildings or restoring archaeological sites to showcase rare artifacts. Specialists regularly visit these museums to ensure quality services and provide necessary support.
Khasab is a charming port town that serves as Musandam's gateway. Visitors can explore its traditional souq or visit the 17th-century Khasab Fort for stunning harbour views. The Musandam Fjords are another must-see attraction. Known as the "Norway of Arabia," these dramatic inlets offer breathtaking scenery.
A dhow cruise through the fjords reveals hidden waterfalls and secluded beaches. Visitors can watch dolphins play in crystal-clear waters or go swimming or snorkelling. Jebel Harim is Musandam's highest mountain and offers panoramic views of fjords, the Arabian Sea, and rugged mountains.
Telegraph Island holds historical significance as a former communication link between Britain and India. Visitors can explore its ruins while enjoying stunning fjord views. Bukha Village offers a glimpse into traditional Omani life with narrow alleys and traditional houses.
Dibba is a laid-back town ideal for exploring the Musandam Peninsula. Visitors can relax on its beaches or engage in water sports like kayaking or windsurfing. Dibba also hosts Six Senses Zighy Bay, a luxurious resort with stunning views of Musandam fjords.
The Ministry's initiatives aim to develop diverse tourism experiences through public-private partnerships. These efforts align with Oman’s broader goals to enhance sustainable tourism while preserving cultural heritage.
