Guide To Iconic Paris Sites For 2024 Olympics Visitors
The upcoming Olympics in Paris will not only showcase remarkable sporting achievements but also shine a light on the city's historical landmarks. From July 26th to August 11th, millions of spectators will flock to Paris to witness world-class sports unfold in iconic venues and along historic routes. Paris 2024 has made it a priority to reduce the Games' carbon footprint, with 95% of the events taking place in existing venues or temporary structures near famous monuments.
While tickets for popular events have been sold out, there are still opportunities to experience the Olympic action in and around Paris' most iconic locations.
Eiffel Tower
The Parc du Champ de Mars, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, will host beach volleyball and the men's Paralympic blind football in a temporary outdoor stadium. While these events require tickets, visitors can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the action from the Eiffel Tower itself. Tickets can be purchased online 60 days in advance, with allocated time slots. Don't forget your binoculars!
Champs de Mars
This majestic half-mile stretch of grassy lawn, flanked by the Eiffel Tower and École Militaire, will be the venue for Olympic judo, wrestling, Paralympic wheelchair rugby, and para-judo. The temporary Champ de Mars Arena, known as the Grand Palais Ephémère, will host these events. Paralympic tickets are still available, and surprise ticket releases and resales are expected in mid-May.
Grand Palais
Built for the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, the Grand Palais boasts a stunning barrel-vaulted glass roof. It will be the backdrop for Olympic fencing, taekwondo, and Paralympic wheelchair fencing. After undergoing intensive restoration work, the Grand Palais will reopen as a cultural venue in 2025, making the Olympic events all the more special.
Trocadéro
The iconic Trocadéro gardens, located across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower, will host the start and finish of the men's and women's road cycling races. Spectators can enjoy the ornamental fountains, palatial museums, and breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower from the esplanade. Trocadéro will also be home to Champions Park, where athletes will parade each afternoon, and the day's finals will be streamed on a big screen in the evening.
Butte de Montmartre
While not an official venue, the butte (hillock) of Montmartre offers a prime vantage point to watch the road cycling races. After crossing the Seine at Pont d'Iéna, anyone can cheer on the cyclists as they make their way through Paris, including the challenging climbs up iconic Rue Lépic. Arrive early to secure a roadside spot along the route and show your support with flags and banners.
Les Invalides
The Hôtel National des Invalides, known for Napoleon Bonaparte's tomb, will host Olympic and Paralympic archery events on the Esplanade des Invalides. Visitors can pair a visit to the military museum with watching the archery competitions. Additionally, Les Invalides will be the finish line for the Olympic men's marathon and night-time Marathon for All, as well as the women's marathon, which will mark the end of the Paris 2024 Games.
Pont Alexandre III
Athletes competing in Olympic marathon swimming will start and end the grueling 10km race beneath the iconic Pont Alexandre III. The bridge, adorned with gold-winged statues, will also be the site for the Olympic individual time trials (road cycling) and triathlon.
Place de la Concorde
This historic square, known for its connection to the French Revolution, will host BMX freestyle, 3x3 basketball, skateboarding, and the debut of Breaking, a fusion of street dance and hip-hop culture. Visitors can enjoy these events for free or explore neighboring Jardins des Tuileries for a peaceful retreat.
Château de Versailles
The grand park of the Château de Versailles will be the setting for Olympic and Paralympic equestrian events, including cross-country, dressage, and show jumping. Visitors can admire the formal French gardens before watching the competitions unfold in temporary outdoor arenas.
As Paris prepares to host the Olympics, spectators have numerous opportunities to witness the games in iconic locations. Whether it's enjoying the view from the Eiffel Tower, cheering on athletes at Trocadéro or along the road cycling routes, or immersing oneself in the history of Les Invalides and Place de la Concorde, Paris promises an unforgettable Olympic experience.
