This Muscat Mosque Has Been Named In Time's World's Greatest Places 2024

An Omani mosque has been recognised in Time magazine's 2024 World's Greatest Places list. Masjid Bab al Salam in Muscat exemplifies a blend of tradition and modernity, merging spirituality, sustainability, and grandeur into an architectural masterpiece, as noted by Altqadum, the Omani design firm responsible for the mosque.

Opened earlier this year in the Omani capital, the mosque was designed to have a contemporary appearance that would help it to become a local landmark.

A Minimalist Marvel

The mosque features a serene complex of blush-coloured circular structures. It is a minimalist marvel bathed in natural light, with a more subdued aesthetic than many of the region's opulent religious spaces. This design encourages visitors to reflect inwardly.

Describing the mosque, Time wrote, "For years, the Middle East's cutting-edge skyscrapers have stood side by side with opulent mosques rooted in centuries of classical Islamic architecture. But lately, a wave of more contemporary houses of worship have emerged on the skylines of Gulf cities, often paying tribute to age-old design in fresh and unexpected ways."

Innovative Design Elements

An arc of water surrounds the central building, while a delicate crescent is etched into the freestanding conical minaret. Inside, over 1,600 crystal bulbs form a chandelier over the main prayer hall. Instead of a traditional mihrab directing congregants towards Mecca, there is a slender floor-to-ceiling window cut out of the facade.

Altqadum shared insights about their design journey on ArchDaily, a global architecture website. They stated that their concept was deeply rooted in spirituality and Omani heritage. "The inception of our concept centred around the spiritual realm, woven intricately with Omani heritage. Envisioning a design that echoes the simplicity of historical mosques yet resonates with contemporary functionality became our guiding principle."

The challenge was significant in creating a monument that speaks to both present and future generations. The project aimed to transcend conventional design boundaries while maintaining a connection to historical simplicity.

Time magazine compiled the 2024 list by seeking nominations from its global network of correspondents and contributors. They also accepted applications, focusing on places offering new and exciting experiences. This year's list expanded to include 100 exceptional destinations, compared to last year's 50 cities.

This recognition by Time magazine highlights Masjid Bab al Salam as an extraordinary destination worth visiting this year. The mosque stands out not only for its architectural beauty but also for its innovative approach to blending tradition with modernity.
