Middle East Aviation Market Experiences 5% Growth, Second-Fastest Globally Amidst Competitive Landscape

A new study from OAG, titled "Middle East Skies: A New Era of Competition, Capacity and Growth," outlines significant advancements in the Middle East's aviation sector. Despite global challenges, the region has witnessed a 5% increase in aviation market size since 2019, positioning it as the world's second-fastest-growing aviation market, trailing only behind South Asia's impressive 12% growth. This surge is attributed largely to the remarkable expansion of Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) and the sustained capacity of Legacy Carriers.

The remarkable growth of LCCs has notably reshaped the aviation landscape in the Middle East, with these carriers now accounting for 29% of the region's total capacity. This marks a significant rise from just 13% a decade ago, in 2014. The annual average growth rate of LCC capacity stands at an impressive 11.5%, far surpassing the growth rates of traditional carriers. This surge in LCC activity highlights a shift towards more competitively priced travel options, democratizing air travel across the region.

Among the carriers, Emirates, Saudia Group, and Qatar Airways have emerged as the top three, based on group position, with a combined operation of 127 million departing seats in 2024. Specifically, Emirates and Qatar Airways have secured positions within both the 2024 Top 20 Global Airlines by Capacity and the Top 10 by Available Seat Kilometers, underscoring their significant role in the global aviation landscape.

A standout example of LCC growth is flynas, which reported a 63% increase in capacity for 2024 compared to 2019, marking it as the fastest-growing airline within the region. Flydubai also showcased substantial growth with a 56% increase, with both carriers operating nearly 14.4 million departing seats each in 2024, demonstrating the competitive edge and rapid expansion of LCCs in the Middle East.

In terms of route competitiveness, the Cairo–Riyadh (CAI–RUH) corridor remains highly contested among eight carriers, making it one of the region's most competitive routes. Other notable routes include Dubai-Riyadh (DXB-RUH) and Cairo-Jeddah (CAI-JED), indicating significant market activity and competition in these corridors. Conversely, the route from Dubai to Heathrow (DXB-LHR) showcases a more concentrated market with four airlines vying for dominance.

The report also sheds light on the pivotal role of Egypt within the growing African market, with a significant portion of LCC capacity being directed towards Egypt from carriers such as flyadeal, flynas, and Air Arabia. This underscores Egypt's importance as a key destination and transit point within the region.

Full-service and legacy carriers continue to rely heavily on connecting traffic, with notable percentages from Qatar Airways, Etihad, and Emirates. This reliance underscores the strategic importance of the Middle East as a global transit hub, facilitating passenger movement across continents.

Filip Filipov, COO of OAG, expressed excitement about the region's growth prospects, stating, "The Middle East region's strategic position as a global hub, coupled with the dynamic expansion of both low-cost and network carriers, is driving unprecedented opportunities. This vibrant market is setting the stage for future advancements in aviation technology and passenger experience and at OAG, we are thrilled to support this evolution."

The Middle East aviation market's expansion signifies a new era of growth, competition, and opportunities, driven by a mix of low-cost and legacy carriers. As these developments unfold, the region is poised to continue its trajectory as a pivotal global aviation hub, fostering further advancements in travel technology and enhancing passenger experiences.
