Did You Know About The ‘World's Happiest Travel Destination’ Near Manchester?

The Lake District, a mere 90-minute drive from Greater Manchester, has been recognised as the 'world's happiest travel destination' in a recent study. This accolade adds to the National Park's already impressive reputation.

Researchers compared 100 popular holiday spots worldwide, including destinations in New Zealand, Australia, and China. They gathered data from well-known tourist attractions within each location to determine the happiest travel destination.

Lake District's Natural Wonders

It's no surprise that the Lake District topped the list. The National Park boasts England's highest peak, Scafell Pike, numerous charming villages, and stunning lakes. These features make it a favourite among visitors.

The region is also home to sixteen major lakes. Windermere stands out as England's longest and largest lake at 11 miles long and covering 5.69 square miles. Wast Water holds the title of the deepest lake in England at 79 metres.

Historical and Literary Significance

The Lake District is not just about natural beauty; it has a rich literary heritage. The area inspired many writers such as Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin, and the Lake Poets. Their works have immortalised its scenic landscapes.

The five Lake Poets—Robert Southey, Arthur Ransome, Dorothy Wordsworth, Alfred Wainwright, and Charles and Mary Lamb—lived here in the early 19th century. Their writings capture much of the district's romantic allure.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Established as a National Park in 1951, the Lake District covers an area of 912 square miles (2,362 km²). In 2017, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural significance and natural beauty.

The Cumbrian mountains within the park include some of England's highest peaks: Scafell Pike at 978 metres (3,209 feet), Helvellyn at 950 metres (3,120 feet), and Skiddaw at 931 metres (3,054 feet).

This recognition as the world's happiest travel destination further cements the Lake District's status as a must-visit location for both its breathtaking scenery and its rich cultural history. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and go a'trekking!
