High Demand for Air Travel

The air corridor between the UAE and India is among the busiest due to the presence of 3.7 million Indian nationals living and working in the UAE. They form the largest group of foreign workers in the expat community.

Airfares between these two countries often surge significantly during peak travel seasons like summer holidays and New Year holidays due to high demand. Travel industry leaders have urged governments to increase seat capacity to meet this growing demand. Many Indians also visit Dubai for tourism throughout the year.

Aviation consultancy OAG reported that the India-UAE air corridor was the ninth busiest by seats in July 2024, with a total of 2.192 million seats available.

Data from Abu Dhabi Airports for the first quarter of 2024 showed that Mumbai, Kochi, and Delhi were among the top destinations, with passenger numbers reaching 240,681, 206,139, and 203,395 respectively.

Expanding Services

"With these new flights, IndiGo now operates 89 non-stop flights weekly to Abu Dhabi from 13 cities in India," said Vinay Malhotra, head of global sales at IndiGo.

He added that the airline aims to provide an "affordable" travel experience for its customers.

Earlier announcements by IndiGo included direct flights between Bengaluru and Abu Dhabi six times a week starting August 1. In January, IndiGo also removed fuel charges on all domestic and international flights.

The introduction of these new routes is expected to offer more convenient travel options for Indian residents in the UAE while potentially easing some of the high demand pressures on existing routes.
