Explore The Historic Abu Sarrah Palaces: A Cultural Jewel Of Aseer Region

The Abu Sarrah historical palaces, located in Al-Azizah village near Abha, are a significant cultural and tourist attraction in the Aseer Region. These palaces, dating back to 1835, are renowned for their unique architecture made from local materials such as stone and juniper wood. The structures are finished with Qadadh, a traditional coating that enhances their durability and aesthetic appeal.

Since their restoration in late 2016, these palaces have become central to cultural heritage tourism in Aseer. They serve as vibrant venues for artistic and cultural events. The palaces have hosted diverse activities like the Qemam International Festival for Mountain Performance Art and various programs by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission.

The palaces also align with Saudi Vision 2030's goals of celebrating the Kingdom’s cultural treasures. As part of Aseer Summer 2025 events, they continue to welcome visitors, offering an immersive experience that transports them back in time. This initiative aims to promote Saudi Arabia's rich heritage on a global scale.

General Supervisor Abdulaziz Abu Sarrah highlighted the development of surrounding courtyards to include cafés and restaurants serving authentic Aseeri cuisine. Additionally, a dedicated children’s area offers cultural and entertainment programs with an educational focus. These include interactive workshops, heritage stories, and creative activities designed to instill cultural values in younger generations.

The Ministry of Culture has designated this year as the Year of Handicrafts. In support of this initiative, the palaces' administration is promoting traditional arts through interactive workshops and live demonstrations by local artisans. Visitors can engage directly with heritage crafts and witness traditional artistry firsthand.

Growing Popularity Among Visitors

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in visitors from both within Saudi Arabia and abroad. Accredited ambassadors have praised the beauty of the historic site, its strategic location atop Soudah mountains, and its rich human stories. The green agricultural terraces surrounding the site further enhance its cultural and visual appeal.

The palaces continue to be a dynamic venue for conferences organized by commissions such as Heritage Commission and Architecture and Design Commission. These events contribute significantly to the site's reputation as a hub for cultural exchange and learning.

The Abu Sarrah historical palaces remain a testament to Aseer Region's rich history and culture. They offer visitors an opportunity to explore heritage while enjoying modern amenities that reflect authentic Aseeri traditions.
