WTTC President Foresees $15 Trillion Growth In Global Tourism Sector
Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), recently commended the UAE for its strategic use of the travel and tourism sector to drive sustainable development. This acknowledgment came during an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the concluding day of the 80th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit, which took place in Dubai from June 2-4.
Simpson particularly lauded the UAE's participation in the WTTC's Hotel Sustainability Basics programme. This initiative is designed to ensure that hotels meet fundamental sustainability standards, thereby assisting travelers in making eco-friendly choices based on a hotel's commitment to the environment.
In her discussion, Simpson highlighted the vital role that travel and tourism play globally, supporting one in ten jobs and contributing to one in ten dollars of global economic output. She underscored the industry's capacity for job creation, employing 348 million people worldwide.
Looking ahead, she forecasted a promising future for the global travel and tourism sector, with its value expected to near $15 trillion over the next decade. This growth rate is anticipated to double that of the global GDP. However, Simpson stressed the importance of aligning this expansion with sustainability initiatives to ensure long-term viability and minimal environmental impact.
Sustainability: A Global Imperative
The conversation with Simpson also touched upon the broader challenges of sustainability within the travel and tourism industry. She underlined the necessity of government involvement in promoting sustainable aviation fuel and the implementation of policies that support its production.
Furthermore, Simpson pointed out the significant role of renewable energy sources in reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the sector, which are responsible for approximately 25 percent of emissions. This highlights the critical need for the travel and tourism industry to adopt more sustainable practices to combat climate change effectively.
