The Geminids Meteor Shower Is Happening This Weekend: Where to Watch in Dubai

This Friday the 13th, Dubai is set to host an enchanting astronomical event, the Geminids Meteor Shower, which promises to captivate residents and visitors alike with a mesmerizing display in the night sky.

This annual event, known for its remarkable visibility of meteors racing at speeds of up to 120,000 kilometers per hour, is considered one of the highlights the year for stargazing enthusiasts. Although this year's full moon may slightly affect the visibility, the spectacle of up to 120 meteors per hour darting across the sky under ideal conditions remains a breathtaking sight, as reported by NASA.

The Dubai Astronomy Group is organising an unforgettable night under the stars in the Al Qudra Desert from 9 PM to 1 AM on Friday, December 13. The evening is set to be filled with a range of activities designed to enhance the experience of the Geminids Meteor Shower.

Participants can look forward to an informative lecture on the history of the meteor shower at 9:30 PM, followed by a question-and-answer session with astronomy experts at 10 PM. Additionally, there will be telescope observations of the night sky beginning at 10:15 PM, and sky mapping and stargazing sessions on the desert sands at 11:30 PM, offering a unique way to witness this celestial marvel.

What Is Geminids Meteor Shower

The Geminids meteor shower, occurring every year from November 19 to December 24, peaks impressively around mid-December, offering a celestial spectacle with about 120 meteors lighting up the sky every hour.

Originating from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, which is sometimes classified as a "rock comet," the Geminids stand out due to their speed and brightness, traveling at a stunning velocity of 79,000 miles per hour. These meteors, often glowing yellow, provide one of the most striking astronomical events visible from Earth.

Initially recorded in the mid-1800s, the Geminids meteor shower has significantly evolved over the years. Initially modest, with only 10 to 20 meteors visible per hour, it has grown into one of the most spectacular meteor showers witnessed today. This transformation has established the Geminids as a major annual event in the astronomical calendar, eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts globally. The shower's peak, under optimal viewing conditions, allows for an astonishing display of up to 120 meteors per hour.

Meteors, in general, originate from the remnants of comets and asteroid bits. As these celestial bodies orbit the Sun, they leave behind a trail of dust and debris. Earth's annual orbit leads it through these trails, causing the debris to collide with our atmosphere. This collision results in the debris burning up, creating the bright and colorful meteor showers we observe from the ground. The Geminids, deriving from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, highlight this fascinating process of cosmic interaction, showcasing the beauty of our universe's dynamics.

Tips For Viewing This Spectacle

For those interested in witnessing this astronomical event, there are several tips to enhance the viewing experience.

  1. Observers should seek out locations far from urban lighting and give their eyes at least 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. This adjustment period is crucial for spotting the swift and vivid Geminid meteors streaking across the sky.
  2. It is advised to lie on your back, facing south, to get a broad view of the heavens.
  3. Preparation for cold weather, by bringing a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair, can also make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

The shower tends to start as early as 9 or 10 p.m., making it accessible for younger viewers and lasts until dawn, providing ample opportunity for everyone to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

For those eager to join the Dubai Astronomy Group's event, ticket prices start at Dh100, book in advance due to limited availability.
