Egypt Among 10 Most-Searched Destinations On Google In 2023

Egypt is known for its historic tourist attractions like the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Giza Pyramids Plateau. Now, these ancient sports stand even more prominently on the global tourism map, with Egypt being recognized as one of the top ten most searched countries for travel on Google in 2023. This recognition comes amidst efforts by the country to bolster its tourism industry, with significant milestones being achieved in tourist arrivals and infrastructure development.

Egypt's Tourism Appeal

According to a report by the Center for Support and Decision-Making, affiliated with the Egyptian Cabinet, Egypt's allure is largely attributed to its ancient tourist attractions. Iconic sites such as the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, Karnak, Abu Simbel, and Nubian villages continue to captivate the imagination of global travelers. The report, highlighted by the French newspaper Le Monde, also points to Egypt's diverse culinary offerings and its year-long sunny climate as key factors attracting tourists from around the world.

Record-Breaking Tourist Numbers

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa, confirmed a milestone achievement in the sector, with Egypt welcoming over 14 million tourists in 2023, surpassing the previous record of 14.731 million set in 2010. This landmark achievement was announced during a cabinet meeting, where Issa revealed that Egypt had hosted 14.906 million tourists. This surge in tourist numbers reflects the country's resilience and the successful overcoming of challenges within the tourism sector.

Expanding Hotel Capacity

To accommodate the growing number of visitors, Egypt's Tourism Ministry, announced a significant increase in hotel capacity. In the past year, Egypt saw the opening or re-operation of 14,209 hotel rooms, marking the highest growth rate in Egyptian tourism in the last 15 years. With a seven percent growth rate, the total hotel capacity now stands at 220,044 rooms. Egypt's Tourism Minister Ahmed Issa emphasised the urgency of further expanding hotel capacity to meet the ambitious target of receiving 30 million tourists by 2028.

Boosting Air Capacity

Alongside enhancing lodging facilities, efforts are underway to significantly increase air capacity. Minister Issa mentioned plans to triple the current level by 2028. This initiative is already showing promising results, with the number of incentivised and incoming air seats to Egypt escalating from 561,852 in August 2022 to 698,779 in October 2023. Such strategic moves are set to further solidify Egypt's position as a premiere global travel destination, offering unparalleled historical, cultural, and recreational experiences to tourists worldwide.
