Dhofar Announces Enhanced Tourist Attractions For Khareef Season 2024
Dhofar, renowned for its diverse attractions that encompass nature, culture, and recreational activities, is setting the stage for an extended Khareef season this year. The season is scheduled to commence on June 21, aligning with the astronomical start of the Khareef, and will extend until September 20, offering visitors a three-month period to explore the governorate's offerings. This extension doubles the duration of the season's activities from previous years, aiming to attract a larger influx of tourists and ensure a more fluid visitor experience across the region.
In a significant move to boost tourism in the Dhofar Governorate, the Dhofar Municipality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, is participating in the Arabian Travel Market 2024. This strategic participation underscores the commitment of Oman's authorities to promote Dhofar as a premier tourist destination, both domestically and internationally.

Dr. Ahmed bin Mohsen Al-Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, highlighted several key initiatives for the 2024 season during a press conference at the exhibition. Among these, the introduction of international events and concerts at the newly conceptualized Atin Square and Al-Murooj Theatre stands out. Additionally, the "Return of the Past" activities in the Saada area will offer a nostalgic journey through Omani culture with a blend of traditional arts and markets.
For family-friendly entertainment, Awqad Park has been earmarked as a haven for children, featuring international villages and amusement areas. Similarly, Salalah Public Park will cater to a broader audience with sports activities designed to promote physical health awareness. Moreover, the inaugural Dhofar International Theatre Festival is set to enrich the cultural tapestry of the region, attracting international theatre groups to perform.
The season is not only about entertainment but also includes sports activities such as karting races and "Drag Race" events, further diversifying the governorate's tourist appeal. Dr. Al-Ghassani also shed light on the infrastructural developments undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran). These include enhancements to tourist sites like the Darbat Valley viewpoint and the Mughsail area waterfront, aimed at elevating the visitor experience in Dhofar.
Last season, Dhofar witnessed a remarkable surge in visitors, with the count reaching 962,000, a significant increase from the 813,000 in 2022. This year, the expectation is to cross the one million visitor mark, a testament to the governorate's growing appeal as a tourism hotspot. The concerted efforts by the Dhofar Municipality and its partners reflect a dedicated strategy to not only enhance Dhofar's tourism infrastructure but also to showcase its unique cultural heritage and natural beauty to a global audience.
