UAE Travel Insurance Demand Rises

The growing demand for travel insurance reflects a significant shift in the travel industry's landscape. As travelers become more aware of the risks associated with travel, there is an increasing focus on safety and preparedness. This change is driving insurance companies to develop more innovative and comprehensive products that cater to the diverse needs of modern travelers.

Additionally, the rise in leisure travel and the prevalence of remote work are likely to influence travel patterns and preferences. The demand for shorter, more frequent vacations is expected to grow, especially to destinations that offer relief from extreme weather conditions. As a result, the travel insurance market is poised for expansion, with more travelers seeking protection against potential disruptions.

The family travellers segment has emerged as the largest share of the market, accounting for 60% and contributing significantly to market revenue. This segment highlights the importance of travel insurance in ensuring well-planned and risk-mitigated travel experiences for families. The need for enhanced travel insurance options for families is evident, as it enables better preparation and peace of mind for all family members.

The shift towards online channels for purchasing travel insurance has encouraged insurers to reevaluate and innovate their long-term strategies. Neeraj Gupta, CEO of Policybazaar.ae said: "The rise in travel insurance inquiries reflects a dynamic shift in behaviour and an evolving mindset of travellers who now prioritise safety, preparedness, and the desire for seamless travel experiences."

Policybazaar.ae has disclosed the top four travel destinations (either inquired or travelled by UAE residents) for 2024: Azerbaijan, Georgia, USA, and Armenia. The average travel duration for some of these trips is a minimum of nine days, reflecting a preference for shorter, more frequent vacations. This trend can be attributed to the extreme summer temperatures and the onset of summer holidays, prompting millions of families and individuals to seek cooler destinations for their summer breaks.

Meanwhile, Hitesh Motwani, CMO, CDTO at InsuranceMarket.ae, a leading insurance marketplace in the Middle East, added: "During the summer holidays, we are seeing a significant surge in demand for travel insurance in Dubai, as more residents plan their trips abroad. The mandatory travel insurance requirement for Schengen visas is driving much of this demand, ensuring that travelers are protected against unexpected events. The importance of having comprehensive travel insurance has been underscored by recent incidents, such as the flight delays caused by heavy rains in Dubai on April 16, 2024. These disruptions have highlighted how essential travel insurance is in covering costs related to flight cancellations, delays, and even lost baggage."

He continued: "As awareness about the benefits of travel insurance grows, we are noticing that more people are prioritizing it as a key part of their travel planning. It's no longer viewed as an optional extra but as a crucial safety net that provides financial protection and peace of mind during travel, especially during the busy summer season when the risk of disruptions is higher."

The global recognition of the importance of travel insurance continues to grow. According to Spherical Insights, the global travel insurance market size is projected to reach $99 billion by 2030. This exponential growth underscores increasing awareness about its benefits.

Overall, as awareness about the benefits of travel insurance grows, more people are prioritizing it as a key part of their travel planning. It's no longer viewed as an optional extra but as a crucial safety net that provides financial protection and peace of mind during travel.
