Here's How Chennai Airport Is Leading Sustainability Efforts With Additional Electric Carts

Chennai Airport is set to significantly improve passenger experience by expanding its electric shuttle cart service, an initiative aimed at facilitating smoother transit within its premises. The introduction of 13 new electric carts is poised to enhance connectivity between the arrivals area, various terminals, taxi stands, and the metro station, marking a notable upgrade in passenger comfort and convenience.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced plans to augment its existing fleet of electric carts at Chennai Airport. This move, adding 13 new electric golf carts to the six already operational vehicles, is designed to address the increased demand for efficient passenger transit solutions. The expanded service will particularly benefit those navigating the distances between the domestic and international terminals, as well as other key points such as taxi stands and the metro station.

Responding to Increased Demand

The decision to increase the number of electric carts comes in response to the evolving infrastructure and passenger traffic patterns at Chennai Airport. The transformation of the former international terminal into the new second domestic terminal (T4)—located at the airport's southern end—has underscored the need for enhanced transport facilities. Passengers of airlines including Air India, Vistara, Alliance Air, and Air India Express, who often face lengthy walks to the taxi boarding area, stand to benefit significantly from the increased availability of electric carts.

An AAI senior official highlighted the necessity of this expansion, attributing it to the high passenger volume and the anticipated increase in flight operations from domestic terminals. The current fleet of six carts has proven insufficient for accommodating the daily influx of approximately 60,000 passengers and the expected rise in flights during peak hours, following the capacity increase of the second domestic terminal.

Enhancing Passenger Convenience

The introduction of additional electric carts is a strategic move aimed at improving passenger convenience, particularly for arrivals, and ensuring easier access to taxi pick-up points. This initiative reflects Chennai Airport's commitment to providing a seamless and comfortable travel experience for its users, aligning with broader efforts to upgrade airport facilities and services. As the airport continues to experience growth in passenger traffic and flight operations, such enhancements are essential for maintaining high standards of passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency.

With the acquisition of the new electric carts, Chennai Airport is set to make significant strides in enhancing its service offerings, demonstrating its dedication to meeting the evolving needs of travelers. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the overall airport experience, facilitating smooth and convenient transit for the thousands of passengers it serves daily.
