Sun Siyam Iru Fushi’s Eco Week: Championing Sustainability And Community Connection

Sustainability and environmental consciousness were at the heart of Siyam Iru Fushi's annual Eco Week - Celebrating Our Planet event. This initiative, aimed at raising awareness on ecological matters, saw the collective efforts of both guests and staff in commemorating significant days such as World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day.

The celebration commenced with an engaging conservation snorkelling journey and a reef cleanup activity. These were spearheaded by the resort's resident Marine Biologist, offering visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the underwater world of the house reef while actively participating in its conservation. This hands-on experience not only highlighted the beauty of the marine environment but also emphasized the collective responsibility toward its protection.

During World Environment Day, the resort organized a poignant tree-planting event complemented by a scenic nature walk along the verdant trails of the island. These activities were tailored to enhance the guests' connection with the natural world, promoting a sense of responsibility towards the environment. The initiative not only enriched guests' experiences but also contributed to the island's lush landscape, reinforcing the resort's commitment to environmental stewardship.

World Ocean Day was another focal point of the Eco Week, featuring coral planting sessions at Waters Edge Beach. This allowed guests to directly contribute to the resort's coral restoration efforts, a pivotal part of their ongoing commitment to marine conservation.

The day was rounded off with an inspirational open-air documentary screening about coral reefs, followed by a mesmerizing night snorkelling adventure that unveiled the nocturnal wonders of the marine ecosystem. These activities were designed not only to enlighten guests about the critical state of marine habitats but also to inspire a collective effort towards their preservation.

Iru Fushi's Eco Week is a testament to its year-round dedication to sustainability, embodied by the Sun Siyam Cares initiative. This program encapsulates a series of environmental actions including coral restoration projects, reef clean-ups, and the planting of trees across the island.

The resort proudly announced the planting of 126 trees and the installation of 18 coral frames in the lagoon this year, alongside significant strides in reducing single-use plastics. This was achieved through the introduction of glass water bottles and the establishment of an in-house bottling plant, further minimizing the resort's environmental footprint.

The resort's sustainability endeavors extend beyond environmental activities. There's a strong focus on community engagement, with efforts to support local schools and conduct environmental awareness sessions. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to sustainability, aiming to balance ecological preservation with community welfare. Through these actions, Iru Fushi not only enhances the guest experience but also contributes positively to both natural and human communities.

Sun Siyam Resorts, the parent entity, underscores its dedication to sustainable and responsible tourism in the Maldives and Sri Lanka through the Sun Siyam Cares programme. This initiative is aimed at minimising the environmental impact while promoting the socio-economic well-being of local communities.

By focusing on reducing energy and water consumption, cutting down on plastic waste, and supporting local heritage conservation, Sun Siyam Resorts demonstrates a holistic approach to sustainability that encompasses both environmental conservation and community support.

The Eco Week at Siyam Iru Fushi serves as a shining example of how tourism can be harmonized with environmental preservation and community development. Through its comprehensive sustainability efforts, the resort not only provides memorable experiences for its guests but also plays a crucial role in the protection and restoration of natural habitats.
