Cape Town International Airport Welcomes Record 10 Million Passengers In 2023/2024
Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has reached a significant achievement by welcoming over 10 million passengers in the 2023/2024 financial year, a first in its history. This milestone was highlighted by the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), marking a significant rebound in passenger traffic, especially from international and regional flights, since the impact of Covid-19. The climax of this achievement came in March 2023, when CTIA processed over 320,000 passengers, surpassing initial expectations.
Mark Maclean, the regional general manager for Acsa's Cluster 2, shared his positive outlook on this achievement, noting the consistent increase in passenger numbers throughout the year. He highlighted that the airport had seen a steady climb in international and regional passenger traffic, with figures in March 2024 outdoing those of the past years. This resurgence points to a robust recovery and a bright future for CTIA, especially after the challenges posed by the global pandemic.
Preparation For Future Growth
Following this significant upturn in passenger volumes, which peaked during the busy season, CTIA is gearing up for further expansion. The airport is set to undertake several projects aimed at boosting its capacity and enhancing the overall passenger experience. Among these projects are the construction of a new runway and upgrades to terminals and other facilities. These developments are designed not only to improve operational efficiency but also to ensure CTIA can accommodate the expected increase in passenger numbers.
Maclean emphasized the importance of patience and support from airport users as these expansion efforts unfold. Acknowledging the complexity of enhancing airport operations and infrastructure, he assured that these investments are geared towards making CTIA a more efficient and welcoming hub for travelers. The focus remains on methodically improving various facets of the airport's operations to support its continued growth and to contribute to the region's appeal as a prime destination for international and regional visitors.
The journey to achieving and surpassing the 10 million passenger mark in a single financial year reflects CTIA's resilience and its critical role in connecting South Africa to the rest of the world. As CTIA embarks on its next phase of development, the commitment to elevating the passenger experience stands at the forefront of its endeavors, promising a brighter future for the airport and its patrons.
